Five in court after German tourist disappears on Cape Town hiking trail

They should warn tourists to stay away from places like that. I'd never hike anywhere near Hangberg. Not even in a group, with dogs and guns. There are plenty of other trails that are significantly safer.

its sad, but true. certain areas should be avoided. there are much safer areas to hike in Cape Town

The problem is that a tourist staying at an Airbnb and using an Uber has nobody to warn them of those risks. You can't put up big signs saying stay away or die...

Was thinking about this guy today. There's no way he survived this long on his own.

I'm 100x more scared of being stabbed than being shot - the chances of survival after being stabbed or shot in the same place are just lower for stabbings. I doubt he was still alive by the end of day 1 :(

these areas. for nature people the 3 green dots on the left. Hout bay sentinel, Long beach, and red hill and dam area (red areas are informal areas)

Is that why armies use firearms instead of knives?

I'm not sure if you're being facetious? I'll reply anyway. Being proficient in a knife fight takes FAR more training than using a FA, and knives only have an effective range a bit less than the length of your arm vs up to multiple kilometers with a sniper rifle. Regardless, most soldiers have a knife as well as FA.

Also note that I said stabbed and not slashed. The width of a knife blade makes it more likely to sever one or more veins/arteries, drastically increasing the rate at which you bleed out. A large or curved blade is all the worse, and if the attacker moves the knife (be it a wiggle, twist, or slicing motion) once it has penetrated, it gets worse still. Disarming even an amateur wielding a knife isn't as easy as it looks in the movies and you're unlikely to get it right without some level of training.

A knife also has the potential to come out of seemingly nowhere. If someone reaches behind their back/to their hip/under their jacket you know they're going for a FA and you have a split second to react. That same person could have their empty hands facing you with a knife up his sleeve which can be pulled out at reaction speed and you'd never see it coming.

Hell, give a short enough distance (5-6 meters, give or take) with someone having a knife behind theiir back and the other having a FA in their holster and you might be surprised who comes out alive. Look up studies behind the controversial "21 foot rule" (as opposed to the rule itself).

Anyone who reckons a knife isn't scary AF doesn't realize what a knife can do.

You said knives were deadlier than firearms. Bring your knife to a gunfight then and find out.

I already answered this with a fairly in-depth reply, which I don't think you read.

Oh, I read it.

I also did my training at the Tygerberg Trauma and Resuscitation Units treating knife and gun wounds from the Cape Town Ganglands. Far more survived the knife wounds.
