I was doing about 150 on the N1 coming back to Pretoria from up north somewhere, I forget where now. Road was completely empty except for the cop hiding behind the bush. I had been driving for a couple of hours already and I just wanted to get home.
Worst ONE was just more than 20km/h over in an urban area.
Worst amount in one month.... well, they found a new camping spot which I didn't spot. 10 x 75km/h in a 60km/h zone. That was also when I was still young and naive and actually paid.
I was once driving 30mph on Embarcadero Rd. Palo Alto, and got pulled over. I was shocked to find out that the speed limit was 25mph. This was for a 2-3 lanes per-side road! It’s as wide as the N1/N2 in a lot of places.
As mentioned above, the only ticket in the past 3 years was in Kruger Jan 2022 shortly after I took this pic, after leaving Skukuza, there was a Hyena female with her two cubs on the road, took a pic ( which I can not find) 2meters away from her.
I think I was 7km/p/h over the limit. Got a R500 fine discounted to R250. Yes, the only time I got a speeding fine was in a nature reserve and nowhere else in a urban area.
170 on a highway. State lost the case in court, so I walked away. Couple of flaws in their case, one being unable to prove the laser they used could not be confused by the lights of several cars in its range and also that several different cars's lights did not produce light at the wavelengths of the laser. It was early evening. All cars had lights on.
In fact, I've never in my driving life of 46 years paid a ticket of any sort.
Used to drive from jhb to bloem every week. I was late one Monday morning and had to hustle.
I did a little over 200km/h on one a section of road where I've never seen trapping. I spotted something odd at a distance and climbed hard on the anchors. This bra then jumped into the road in an attempt to pull me over, so I did.
Sweating buckets, the guy comes up to me and says he caught me doing 159km/h. I let out a huge sigh of relief and you could see the cop was visibly confused
He tells me the fine was 2.5k and I told him I was happy with that (and I wasn't gonna budge for a "spot fine").. A few mins into writing the ticket, the cop got over the paper work and let me off with a warning.
In 1973 when there was fuel restrictions, my brother-in-law and I went on a motor bike ride on the N3 between Gilooly and Bucchleuch. The speed limit was 70Km/h due to fuel restrictions and we were clocked at 173km/h. Instantly arrested and taken to Lombardy East police station, then to Hillbrow police station for bail.
Had to appear in Randburg Magistrates court B on the Monday. Pleaded guilty and we were each fined R500.0 thanks to our lawyer friend who used to ride with us on the breakfast run.
failed my Driving test the 1st time because I was speeding with the examiner,
was doing 75 in a 60 Zone, all because there were no signs saying its 60.
passed 2nd time, never gotten a speeding ticket since, always drive under the speed limit since then.
During my 2nd year of Varsity, I had been driving for 3 years at that point without a single fine in my Slopel Xosa lite.
One day my dad receives 5 fines in the mail, ranging from R125 to R500. One for each day of the week.. on the same section of road juuuust before turning into Varsity..
Pops was a good sport and said "I didn't think you actually attended Varsity so I'm pleasantly surprised you're going".
