Switching off South Africa's geysers could save up to four stages of load-shedding — Ramokgopa

Minister in the Presidency responsible for Electricity, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, is expected to visit the Matimba and Medupi Power Stations in Limpopo on Monday.

This is a continuation of the minister's visits to all of Eskom's power stations which began last week. The visits are aimed at engaging management, workers and unions.

Getting rid of the ANC can save South africa

My geyser is already off for most of the day. It comes on twice a day for a hour and a bit.

Sadly I think we are in the minority. I think there are a significant chunk of a people who just leave theirs running all day, either because they're too lazy or just want to make sure their water is hot when the power is actually on.

Yes! Ban geysers, electric heaters and kettles! If you can’t bath in cold water, maybe it’s time for you to put on your big boy pants and start every day with a cold shower so that your testicles finally drop.

Sounds like nonsense, most geysers are already on timers, etc.

You'd be surprised. My parents don't run their geysers on timers and have their one geyser on the whole day. The other one they switch on and off when guests arrive.

I'm not even going to waste my time reading the article.
Either subsidize 70% of homes and provide them with free gas geysers or stfu

Lets rather be proactive and rename them all to help Cyril solve these problems.

This guy is a FARKING Rocket scientist.
Fix ESKOM you dumass.
Ministers should talk more so they can heat the water with the hot air they cause.
At this point, I want him to focus less on fixing Eskom, and more on finding and procuring alternative sources of energy. Fixing Eskom is a lost cause.

Unfortunately from what I've seen, this guy is just an ANC mouthpiece. I have as much hope in him resolving the problem as I did with Gweezy and Pravin in charge.

Four stages of load-shedding, i.e. 4000 MW.

Assuming a normal geyser of 4 kW, basically he's asking to turn off 1M geysers. Is my maths right? I passed maths in matric but that's no guarantee these days.

My geyser is "on" all the time but honestly there's no point to not having it on all the time. It switches itself on and off according to need. Unless your geyser insulation is *really* bad, then having it on a timer doesn't change much from the point of view of the grid on the whole. It just constrains which hours it operates in.

It would be great if we'd had solar or heat-pump geysers but these are really expensive up-front.

In the meantime I'm going to go and enjoy my hot bath this evening, just to cock a snook at the electricity minister and tell him what I think of his suggestions.

We still have one of those green box geyser control systems, that they installed beside our DB board. No idea if it still works though. Is this not something that every home has?

If your geyser is on 24/7/365 you are in serious hot water... It should self regulate according to the heat lost and only switch on for 4 ish minutes at a time every 3 ish hours.
I think more of the problem is just poorly insulated geysers. I often just see them just hanging outside with zero consideration for insulation.

yea the ripple boxes was forced installed thanks to pressure from nersa i think (salt)

so most geysers are off during 2 peak times anyway

they send a ripple before and after peak times to switch on and off
