The Honda Civic Type R Thread

If you could buy it without that monstrous wing on the back, I'd have one

The local Honda dealer laughed when I asked him. That is a R850k purchase he won't get

New Honda Civic Type R Grabs FWD Nurburgring Lap Record

Honda has claimed the Nurburgring lap record for a front-wheel-drive production car after setting a time of 7:44.881.

That number is identical to the time set by the FK8 Type R but that is because track officials instituted new rules in 2019. This means that a full Nordschleife lap went from 12.800 miles (20.6 km) to 12.944 miles. The previous-generation Type R completed the lap under the old regulations.

“Six years after the lap record was set by the previous-generation Civic Type R, we reached this new dimension as a result of all of the passions we poured in and all the advancements we made for this Type R model,” said Hideki Kakinuma, the model’s development leader.

The Civic Type R was wearing Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 Connect tyres which are an option through the dealerships.

Watch the Honda Civic Type R rip a new Nurburgring lap record

FL5 Civic Type R picks up where the FK8 left off… by snatching back FWD bragging rights

The new Honda Civic Type R has followed in the tyre tracks of its predecessor by leaving the rest of the front-wheel driven world for dust. Yep, it’s broken the Nurburgring lap record again.

Honda says the car’s development team set a time of 7m 44.881s on 24 March, surpassing the 7m 45.389s benchmark set by the stripped-out, £72k Renault Megane Trophy-R in 2019.

Those of you with an eidetic memory may have noticed that the Type R’s latest time is a second slower than the FK8-generation managed six years ago, but Honda points out that the FL5’s time was set over the full 20.8km (12.92mi) lap ‘as defined by circuit management in 2019’. So neurgh.

What’s really impressive is that the Type R is now less than a second slower around the ‘ring as a Porsche Cayman GT4, 2010 Nissan GT-R and early Audi R8, and just as quick as a Pagani Zonda S from 21 years ago. Progress!

The 2023 Honda Civic Type R Is Here to Play With Record-Setting Nürburgring Lap

A 7:44.881 marks a new fastest front-wheel-drive time for the Nordschleife.

Five years ago, Honda set a new front-wheel drive Nürburgring record with the FK8 Civic Type R. That car ran a 7:43.8, which stood untested for a year before Renault took the podium with its Megane RS Trophy-R and a 7:40.1 time. Now, Honda’s taken the throne back in a new Type R, with a 7:44.881 lap. Wait, what?

Yes, you read that right: The new record-setting lap is slower than the old one. That’s not the fault of the Type R itself, but of the track—as of 2019, the rules around what counts as a “lap” changed. The new route is longer, meaning all newly certified record times will be higher.

New Honda Civic Type R in SA (2023) Price & Specs

Honda’s “most responsive and powerful (Civic) Type R ever” has arrived in South Africa! Although not as aggressively styled as its predecessor, the next iteration of the world’s most potent series-produced front-wheel-drive hot hatch is sure to make local enthusiasts salivate. Herewith specifications and pricing details for the new Civic Type R!

The year 2022 marked the 25th anniversary of Honda’s iconic high-performance hatchback, which saw the introduction of the 6th-gen model in its home market. Since the 3rd-gen (FN) model – launched in 2007 – every iteration of the Japanese hot hatch has been sold in South Africa and the new FL5 version, which rivals the Hyundai i30 N, Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI and, to a lesser extent, the Toyota GR Corolla, has now arrived on local soil.

Earlier this month, the new Civic Type R recently set a new lap record for a front-wheel-drive car at the famed Nürburgring Nordschleife with a time of 7 minutes 44.881 seconds which is a testament to the development that’s gone into this latest iteration.

The new Civic Type R is powered by a revised K20C1 turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine that generates 235 kW and 420 Nm, increases of 7 kW and 20 Nm, respectively over the outgoing model.

How much does the Honda Civic Type R Cost in South Africa?

Pricing for the new Honda Civic Type R has been confirmed at R979 000. Note that the outgoing Type R was priced from R857 500.

A total of 60 units have been allocated to the South African market and Honda SA has reportedly secured 25 pre-orders for the new Type R, all of which have been sold. If you’re interested in buying the new Type R, we suggest you reach out to your local Honda dealer to make your intentions known!

New Honda Civic Type R lands in Mzansi with ambitious price tag

It’s a good year for performance hatchbacks in South Africa.

The Toyota GR Corolla is heading our way and the Volkswagen Golf 8 R was recently launched locally. But today the spotlight falls on the new-generation Honda Civic Type R, which is being launched this week.

Honda’s new performance hatch is listed at R979 000, which is R152 000 more than its predecessor cost, and a R66 200 premium over the Golf R. The Honda does however fight back with better interior specification, which we’ll get to after the important stuff.

The new Honda Civic Type R is powered by an upgraded 2.0-litre turbocharged VTEC that produces 235kW and 420Nm, which is an increase of 7kW and 20Nm over the previous model.

All grown up – Honda Civic Type R (FL5) review

Summary

Sadly, there’s a severe lack of natural competitors for the Civic Type R in our market. Arguably its greatest rival in South Africa has been the Renault Mégane RS, and the final version of that car, the Ultime, hasn’t been earmarked for local launch. The Golf 8 GTI is still new but when Volkswagen gets serious then it’ll be game on with perhaps a more hardcore version like a ClubSport. For now, there’s just the i30 N from Hyundai but I can’t wait to get them all together for a battle royale to find out who the real hot hatch king is, because I think the Type R has just given this division notice.

DRIVEN: New Honda Civic Type R was unashamedly created for pure driving pleasure

We all think we’re tame racing drivers until you sit beside someone who does it for a living. It’s then that you get to appreciate what the Type R is about and what it’s able to do.

With tyres squealing, hard steering and a deft right foot, I don’t think there was much left before its limit was reached yet it never felt dangerous or out of control.

There’s much to be said about a car that will thrill you around a track and then gently take you back home. The Honda Type R is exactly that.

It’s a driver’s car aimed at people who appreciate a proper hot hatch that don’t need automatic gearboxes or all-wheel drive, but live for a rewarding drive.

Sadly, this will be the last Type R with an internal combustion engine, so if you fall into that category, get one of the 35 that are left.

The new Honda Civic Type R comes with a five-year/90 000km service plan, five-year/200 000km warranty and three-year roadside assistance

Pricing: R979 000
