How do you typically indicate at a roundabout / traffic circle?

1 - obvious, so you don't waste the time of the person at the first exit.
6 - the person at the first exit should be yielding. Having an indicator at the 2nd exit where you're going benefits nobody.
8 - so the person at the 2nd exit is aware that you're passing them.

This is coupled to the fact that the left lane should be for turning left or going straight. The right lane is for going straight or turning right.

It's scary how many people have no clue about basic rules of the road, and you have retards in the left lane trying to turn right, potentially causing an accident with someone on the right lane. Like wtf are they thinking, they are so special that everyone is going in the same direction as them? This should be part of every driving test...

I cannot believe this is a question.

You indicate left when you are going left. You don’t indicate when you are going straight and you indicate right when you are going right.

This is no different in a circle.

Indicating going left right on the exit is a nice courtesy gesture so the person in line doesn’t need to wait a whole 1 second longer.

The better question should be which lane you are entering when you are hitting circle…because you cannot be in the outside lane if you are turning right.
I can't believe that people are so confidently getting it wrong while insulting everyone else. People making up their own own rules is what creates confusion and uncertainty leading to accidents.

According to Arrive alive...

To Turn Left (taking the first exit)

  • signal left and approach in the left-hand lane
  • keep to the left on the roundabout and continue signalling left to leave.

To go straight on (taking the second exit)

  • select the appropriate lane on approach to and on the roundabout. If no marking on the road it is usually safest to keep to the left lane
  • stay in this lane until you need to alter course to exit the roundabout
  • signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want.

To Turn Right (taking the last exit or third exit )

  • signal right and approach in the right-hand lane
  • keep to the right on the roundabout until you need to change lanes to exit the roundabout
  • signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want.

If you don't treat a mini circle effectively as a four way stop you should get the middle finger. Whether one agrees with it or not, SA road law/regulations stipulate that mini circles are treated similarly as four way stops.
I don't disagree, but why not just make them 4 way stops and be done with it. There's a mini circle at the intersection by my house and there's an accident every other week because some chop didn't see it and thought he had right of way. Honestly not worth the 2 seconds saved by not needing to come to a complete stop.

First exit (left turn):
1. Signal left only

Second exit (straight):
4. Only indicate left when exiting
Third exit or beyond (right turn):
7. Signal right when entering, left when exiting

I also only really do this on a dual lane circle, single lane I only signal when exiting to avoid confusion.

Agreed. Mini circles are pointless because people realise too late that its not a 4 way stop.

Needs to either be a full circle with an island or a 4 way stop.

Mini circles work great for when one road is very busy and the road crossing it is not very busy.
If you put a 4way stop it slows the busy road too much.
If you put nothing then the road that is not busy will never get a chance to enter or cross other road.

They just need to be signposted better

1,3,7 is the legal requirement.
incorrect

1,4,7 is the K53 test's way

but there is no legal requirement on this specific topic i.e. you can fail your test if you don't follow 1,4,7, but you cannot be fined for it once you have a license and do not follow 1,4,7

@Jean Claude Vaaldamme has already mentioned one of the reasons mini circles are used and at least in theory, why they should work well. The issue lies in that most motorists have no idea of the actual traffic laws/regulations pertaining to mini circles, like my father who has been in SA since 1967 and driving since 1972.
