Rain and storm for Cpt pt 2

If there is one thing that kills a storm its closing schools.

Every damn time they do it the storm just blows over.
Anyway... the fact that they considered it and then just decided its fine... will end up being some kind of disaster.
Stellenbosch has many old trees. It just takes one to blow over on any mildly busy road and traffic comes to a stand still. Being autumn there are leaves everywhere. I am expecting flooded roads this morning. Wife and kids are leaving half an hour earlier for school/work, taking the 4x4 for safety's sake. Fortunately I can work from home.

This morning's SAWS ship synoptic chart gives a very good idea of what is instore for the next 36 hours. The deepening surface low is interesting, but since it is located just south of CT, it is not the most critical element of the weather outlook. What is behind the front is unusual (at least compared to a weak cold-front), an almost endless series of tightly spaced isobars, which will bring a prolonged period of strong winds and relentless rain showers. There is no sign of the South Atlantic High coming to the rescue, bringing drier but still cloudy condition only by Wed 13th. Of course this is only a surface representation, but all of the other elements suggested by the weather models are present. Waxing nostalgic for a moment, this is the kind of real winter event that we only get a few times a decade.

Update: It is really bucketing down in Kenilworth (6:45am) as the 2nd front passes. The yr.no forecast shows an hourly rainfall rate of 14mm (much less later in the day).

Edit: CT airport showed a wind gust of 41kts at 6:30am, and 45kts at 7am. Edit 2: 49kts at 8am.

Exactly why I decided to keep both my kids home today. With horrible this wind and with such a large amount water there is bound to be some chaos in Stellenbosch.

The wind has just started picking up few more notches, I can hear things blowing and banging around from the neighbours houses.

Looking at the traffic on google maps I think there are going to be lots of absentees today. Teachers are just going to be babysitters today for the few die-hards that will come to school.

It wasn't clear exactly when the front and peak rainfall would arrive. 6:30am to 8am is the worst for traffic. Not that it's going to magically get any better during the day...

Wind and rain quite hectic in the north now. Seeing people scrambling to work turned on the sympathy switch.

is this somehow a monsoon/hurricane/typhoon? never seen this sort of driving rain and wind ever before,
feels super unusual,

LOL, the thread is full of warnings about this event. It's called winter in Cape Town (see my previous posts). Are you new here, or fooled by last year's mild conditions?

Next level road closures this morning! Had to turn around on Tygervalley Road and go via Contermanskloof past Meerendal. That in itself was an adventure, given the state of that road.
