Rain and storm for Cpt pt 2

Naaas, new thread. I might as well say it's raining currently.

I didn't realise how many pages we added in the last week! Mostly dry overnight in Kenilworth, but bucketing down when I woke up this morning.

Rained heavily overnight but seems fine now. My wife just went for a jog actually.

This event seems to be more showery rain. Dry spells interspersed with heavy downpours.

P.S. All forecasts indicate that Monday 15th will be dry, but the rest of next week looks mixed...

There will be a long queue at golf courses and driving ranges.

Do you think the groundwater on flooded golf courses will magically disappear in one day?
Depends on the course. Greens are usually upside down saucers, so the water runs off quickly.
Burgundy is a mashie course and there is not much fairway, so that one should be fine.

Parow golf course I’m not sure, will drive past there and look.

Driving ranges not an issue.

Yarre as I drifted in and out of sleep all I could hear was the sound of the blimmen rain! Good thing I wasted the pool water yesterday before I started drinking.

I grew up in Plumstead, not far from Royal Cape in Ottery. That whole area used to be a seasonal wetland 100 years ago (my mom used to talk about swimming there). A drainage canal leading to Princess Vlei, and landscaping have presumably made it playable.

I also live across the road from Kenilworth Racecourse, which has a (little known) seasonal vlei in the middle.

The SAWS reports very modest amounts of rain during the 24 hours to 8am on Sat 13th. However every millimeter now adds to flooding, and the puddles on our lawn are back. Was dry for a while, but bucketing down again.

Next week looks only semi-wet, but clearer weather is only likely towards the last third of July (Mon 22nd?).

I've measured 331mm of rainfall, from the 4th to the 12th of July 2024.
It's still raining so it'll be well over 350mm today.
Kirstenbosch would be more.

That is probably half or more of our annual rainfall in this part of the Southern Suburbs of CT.

Whereabouts? The annual average around Cape Town ranges from 450mm at the airport, to 1500mm in Newlands. Orographic effects play a big role in this, and several recent fronts have had relentless wind and rain.

I haven't done a proper calculation for our gauge in Kenilworth (it overflows at 30mm), but it is probably close to your numbers. Our annual average probably falls in the range of 800mm to 1200mm in most years.

Dry mid morning here SP side until about an hour ago when it started bucketing down.... the weather Gods have finally more than compensated for a dry May and June... been a while since a recall such continuous spell of inclement weather with rain in CT.
