Rain and storm for Cpt pt 2

Just drove from Thornton to Claremont and back. Traffic was a breeze, not many cars on the road. Loads of tree debris scattered across the roads though.

Planes have also been taking off over my house. Checked Flightradar and I see they're using the SE/NW runway for takeoffs.

The SE/NW runway at CT airport is quite short. It was used for B727s in the 1970s. I didn't think it was still active:
Runways
Direction Length m ft Surface
01/19 3,201 10,502 Asphalt
16/34 1,701 5,581 Asphalt

Edit: And no, the short runway can't be extended, due to space limitations.

Jeez, you really can be obtuse. I spelled it out as clearly as possible. CT only has one runway, aligned north/south. If there is a 50kt wind gust coming from the west, then no aircraft, airline, pilot, or anyone in their right mind would try to fly under those conditions.

Some light reading:
Ps I don't bother replying to Jet fighter - actually have him on ignore as he is just too much... Either a super troll or super dim

Planes have been managing to land again at the airport.
bigger ones finding it easier, but a EMBRAER ERJ-190 just managed to land after going around 2 times.

Some of the diverts from PE are coming back to CT. Probably take a whole day to sort out the backlog of flights.
wind should drop later and ease off this eve

Well, technically I was wrong, CT has two runways. Not that it changes the argument for international flights. P.S. I have many people on ignore, but for rhis thread I read all comments.

West Coast National Park has recorded a whopping 89 km/h wind speeds, with various sections of the park currently experiencing flooding conditions following the severe weather impacting the region.

Visitors are urged to exercise extreme caution during this period and to adhere to all safety signage, road closures and staff instructions.

The South African Weather Service has issued severe weather warnings for the Western Cape, including heavy rainfall, strong winds and potential flooding impacts.

Please avoid unnecessary travel within affected areas and continue to monitor official updates.

A Safair plane just took off from the short runway this morning (the one more WNW). Don't think the bigger planes are certified to land on it as very short...

Heard on the radio a few trucks have been blown over. Not surprised with that area though, the wind absolutely pumps up there even on a mild day in Cape Town.

Our Hermanus WhatsApp group saying 4 trucks have blown over.
