Rain and storm for Cpt pt 2

Nothing phases me anymore when it comes to summer winds, after being in Milnerton for 2 years, facing right into the " Bek van die Suidoos " residentially.

But this Northerly/NW stormy wind for now is " aan die gang ".

Fortunately no damage around us in the area that I am aware of.

Sunday however I saw a Sunset Beach house burning next to Marine Drive. Was a bit surreal given the weather etc.
The South Easter is well known for howling something horrible, but it’s normally these northerly winds that are less common, that bring the big rain and flooding etc, like we are seeing now.

They carry far more condensation, and lots of potential energy for wind production, due to the pressure differential once they interact with colder denser air coming off the southern oceans

Latest status:
I was hoping for rainfall data from SAEON Dwarsberg, but the server has been down for the last 36 hrs.
I was hoping for the latest Berg River Dam levels, but the database has been offline for the last 6 hours.

The forecast rain for today (Tues 12th) starting at midnight, intermittent showers, both places heaviest until about 3pm:
Cape Town 20mm
Franschhoek 100mm

The tail-end of this system is approaching, with the 6am yr.no forecast showing lower rainfall numbers for the rest of today (Tues 12th). Cape Town 8mm and Franschhoek 40mm. Winds are very slowly subsiding, though last night was quite gusty by 'normal' standards (40kts at times). Temperatures continue to remain relatively mild.

I was going to say great reporting and photographs by the Daily Maverick, but all the work was done by GroundUp and freelancers:

I don't know where this was in Kenilworth, fatality as car crushed by tree:

A bit more news on the fatality in Kenilworth, with its historic old oak trees:

According to Ward 59 councillor Mikhail Manuel, emergency crews responded quickly after the tree collapsed onto the vehicle.

“Emergency services, SAPS, Law Enforcement and the City Parks Team were quick to respond,” Manuel said in a message shared with residents.
The driver escaped without injuries but was taken to hospital for precautionary checks.

“Sadly, the passenger has passed away,” Manuel confirmed.

Tennant Road, between Oak Avenue and Toleni Road, was cordoned off while authorities processed the scene and began clearing debris.

Mudslide: N1 inbound before the Huguenot Tunnel, outbound after Huguenot Tunnel. Road already closed N1 outbound at the Tunnel and inbound at Rawsonville due to Du Kloof

This is really tragic. But I can just see one of those self righteous green terrorist types that want to chop down all the pine forests in tokai and similar, and return everything to indigenous species only, will use this freak accident as to justify removing the “horrible alien invasive” oak trees.

WTF, is this really the time to be whinging about that?

They have actually been cutting down many of the Oak trees in the area because there is some beetle that is killing them and then they fall over/drop massive branches, perhaps what happened here.
