Five Italians die during cave dive in Maldives​

Five Italians have died in a scuba diving accident in the Maldives, the foreign ministry in Rome has said.

"The divers are believed to have died while attempting to explore caves at a depth of 50 metres (164ft)," the ministry said, adding that this happened in Vaavu Atoll.

The Maldives' military said one body had been found in a cave about 60 metres underwater, and the other four divers were believed to be also there.

It said divers with special equipment had been sent to the area, describing a search operation as a very high risk.

The incident is believed to be the worst single diving accident in the tiny Indian Ocean nation, a popular tourist destination because of its string of coral islands.

Agreed, of all the ways I may eventually snuff it, death by underwater cave exploration is extremely unlikely to be the one.

I have a love hate relationship with that channel, one thing it has taught me to never go caving, and never, ever go to nutty putty.

Your bottom time at 50m on air is 5 minutes.
Were they really on air? What on earth were they hoping to achieve if so?

I've done one less than responsible dive, bottomed out at 55.5 metres. It was planned as a max rate descent, hit the bottom and go under the arch and then immediately slow ascent to the surface for a 20-25 minute total dive.
No fecken way I'd go into any form of overhead environment at that depth.

Water more than ankle deep is risky in my books. Very unlikely I'll suffer the same fate.

One of the recuring causes that prop up most of the time is sediment stirring from the floors, make it impossible to see what is in front of you.

Well that is now the final straw. I am cancelling all the cave diving activities I had planned for the weekend!

Yeah, unless they where already narced, cant imagine what they where thinking .

The blue hole in Dahab has an arch out to the ocean at 50m ish and that has claimed a fair few divers. I guess people think that those safety limits apply to other people, then they pay the price.

Fortunately for me I can't equalise, really wanted to do a diving course years back.

Had a few near drowning experiences surfing big surf, really scary.

Times I died from monsters in Subnautica, less than 10.

Times I have died in Subnautica getting turned around in a cave and drowning, too many to count...
