Rain and storm for Cpt pt 2

The publicity photo of the cottage doesn't look like it's in a flood-plain, but Google search indicates that it is located on the upper Breede River, just above where the Witte River exits from Bains Kloof and joins the main channel. The DWS has a flow gauge in the area, which is downstream from Ceres. The chart shows rates in excess of 290m^3/sec during Tues 12th, when the gauge limits were significantly exceeded.

Edit: Unfortunately the Breede River is too wide and shallow to construct reservoirs, so the majority of that water goes straight downstream.

I was wondering if it would be possible to pump water from the Breede River to Theewaterskloof, but I found an old document saying that the river is polluted by farming activities.

Water pollution is a huge problem elsewhere in the world. Most ancient cities are built on rivers, and take what supplies they can get. Cape Town is one with modern infrastructure, not built on a river, but with access to clean runoff from mountain catchments. We take it for granted sometimes.

I would say largely correct, though some of theeswaterskloof and voelvlei inflows are impacted by upstream agriculture runoff and perhaps some other runoff from villiersdorp and tulbagh respectively.

Valid points, but the two dams you mention are very large, and the majority of the inflow is fresh. An old saying goes: Dilution is the solution to pollution...

What a difference a week makes! This morning's SAWS ship synoptic chart (Sat 16th) shows that the South Atlantic High has regained dominance, and there isn't a cold-front likely to pass within a thousand kilometers of Cape Town during the next few days:

Compare the chart from exactly 7 days ago, posted just before the first day of the storm system:

Our hearts go out to all the farmers, families, and residents around Robertson and other towns who have been affected by the recent flooding and devastation.
During times like these, we are reminded of the strength of our community and the importance of standing together. 🤍
We are keeping everyone in our thoughts and prayers and want to extend a helping hand — if anyone is in need of assistance with clean-up efforts, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
