South African hosting and Internet companies hit with mass DDoS attacks

Several hosting providers and other Internet infrastructure companies in South Africa were knocked offline due to sustained Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks.

1-Grid recently suffered an extended outage, which drew attention to the scale of attacks targeting web hosting companies in South Africa.

Afrihost is all down on the hosting as well. Been trying to get answers from the since yesterday morning. Meanwhile our servers are inaccessible and nothing is working. And I get the same bullshit excuse from them since yesterday. How pathetic Afrihost's service, never ceases to amaze me.

Surely they had DDoS mitigation already, either they had it at one stage then canceled it or they had it but their package couldn't handle the amount of traffic.

I'm guessing it was pretty big. Even with my measly 250-300 public IP's allocated there - 422mbit/s at peak reached my firewall interfaces. The top 3 attackers accounting for about 10% of the traffic (at least from a quick check) were from Thailand, Vietnam and Nairobi.
