BMW iX3 gets more range ahead of its US launch

While BMW has already launched the new iX3 in many markets, it hasn't officially landed in the US yet. Ahead of that, it's received a boosted range estimate from its maker for the US market (using the EPA testing cycle). The iX3 xDrive50 version is now estimated by BMW to reach 698 km on one charge using the EPA testing cycle, up from the previously advertised number of 644 km.

Do keep in mind that these are still estimates - the EPA hasn't yet published the official number. Still, it's good to see the fact that BMW believes its newest EV has what it takes to go over 644 km on one charge.

There aren't a ton of EVs in the US market that can claim this feat. The iX3 will also be among the fastest charging EVs in the US market, as it can be charged at up to 400kW DC thanks to its 800V platform. If you can find a charger that supports that, the iX3 can gain up to 282 km of range within just 10 minutes of charging, while going from 10% to 80% will take only 21 minutes.

The formal US launch of the iX3 is planned for May, with the online configurator expected to go live in June. iX3 models for the US market are going to then start rolling off the assembly line in early September, with the first deliveries to customers taking place in the US in late September or early October.

BMW iX3 tops real-world range test charts beating WLTP estimates

The Norwegian Automobile Federation (NAF) conducts two real-world EV range tests each year - one in the summer and one in the winter. The summer test just concluded, and the results are quite fascinating.

The top performer turned out to be the BMW iX3 with a real-world range test of 781 km, and impressively it's 11 km more than the WLTP-rated range. The WLTP range is usually a tad more generous than the EPA standard that the US uses. Either way, the iX3 beat expectations by 1.5% even over that figure.

The Lucid Gravity took the second place with 719 km, but 3.7% below its WLTP rating of 748 km. The Mercedes CLA, the GLC 400 and the Xpeng X9 round up the top five.

When it comes to deviation, the MG IM6 was the worst offender, its 446 km achievement coming 11.7% lower than its official WLTP rating. On the opposite side of the spectrum, the Xpeng X9, which took fifth place in the overall range test, was the vehicle with the highest positive deviation, posting an 11.4% higher result than its WLTP or 645 km on a single charge.
