Sporty meets sustainable: the new Toyota Corolla Cross GR-S hybrid arrives in Mzansi

Driving
During the launch, we drove a short route from Toyota Gazoo Racing headquarters at Zwartkops through Pretoria’s Eastern suburbs that included some highway driving.

It’s exactly the circumstances that the Corolla Cross would experience daily, and it’s understandable why it’s a local favourite.

Everything about the car sits just right, and the cosmetic interior additions do much to enhance the look and feel.

There’s a bit of engine whine with hard acceleration while the CVT does its thing, but there’s enough power on both variants to pass slower traffic or aim for a gap, as we discovered on a truck-congested left lane.

There weren’t any twisty roads on the route, but from previous experience, the Corolla Cross is actually not bad when it comes to being flung around.

Of course, that’s not its intention, and the GR-Sport uses the same powertrain as the rest of the offerings, so don’t expect explosive reactions. There’s enough there, though, to make it an entertaining drive with fair steering feedback.

Our consumption in the GR-S stood at 6.9l/100km while the GR-S HEV returned figures of 4.9l/100km.

All models are sold with a six-services/90,000km service plan and a three-year/100,000km warranty, while the hybrid battery is covered for eight years or 160,000km.

Rumoured Toyota Corolla Cross double-cab bakkie spotted in camouflage

Images of the rumoured Toyota Corolla Cross bakkie have surfaced online. Although details surrounding the unibody double-cab remain thin, here’s what we know so far…

In an interview with Automotive News in May 2026, Toyota hinted at the possibility of a RAV4-based double-cab bakkie, with Ted Ogawa, CEO of Toyota Motor North America, saying that such a model is an opportunity for the brand. However, while the latter remains unconfirmed, images of what’s believed to be the rumoured Corolla Cross-based double-cab have surfaced online.

Shared on Instagram page blogauto_br, the camouflage-wrapped double-cab was spotted in São Paulo, Brazil. Although camouflaged, those with a keen eye will notice the upcoming model’s front end resembles the Corolla Cross compact SUV’s. However, to accommodate a load bed, the pickup version is expected to sport stretched bodywork compared to the latter. As a reminder, the compact SUV measures 4 460 mm in length, 1 825 mm in width, and 2 640 mm between the front and rear axles.

Toyota Corolla Cross double cab bakkie prototype spotted in Brazil – could it come to SA?

A Corolla bakkie. It actually happened in the 1970s. It nearly happened again in the 2010s, and now it looks like it’s happening for real – in South America at least.

A disguised prototype of a double cab bakkie that appears to be heavily based on the current Toyota Corolla Cross has been spied on a highway in São Paulo, Brazil.

A video of the camouflaged vehicle, filmed by journalist Fabiano Mazzeo, was posted on Instagram this week by Brazilian publication BlogAuto, which reports that the new pick-up will go into production at the Sorocaba plant in Brazil in 2027.

According to Motor1, engines are expected to include a fuel-flex version of the current 1.8-litre hybrid, as well as a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre petrol and a fuel-flex plug-in hybrid model.

Compact double cab bakkies are popular in Brazil, and the Corolla Cross pick-up will go up against some formidable competition, including the Fiat Toro, Ram Rampage, Ford Maverick and the upcoming Volkswagen Tucan, which is also expected to surface in 2027.

The new VW bakkie has also been long-rumoured for South African introduction, with speculation rife that it will be built alongside the new, and technically related, Tera compact crossover at the Kariega assembly plant.

It would be cool, but I won't hold my breath.

Nissan and Renault have been 'working' on a Duster bakkie for SA for about 10 years now. Toyota built the Corolla Quest bakkie prototype, but scrapped the project. Ford talked about a smaller bakkie for SA when the launched the T6 Ranger and stopped building the Bantam.

SA almost got a Toyota Corolla bakkie in the 2010s - will the Cross make it happen for real this time?

Is the Corolla Cross an easy vehicle to steal or are they just a target for hijackers? I went to my local CPF meeting last night and the speaker there said it was the most stolen vehicle in the area. Just yesterday afternoon one was stolen from the local mall.

I'm not sure how "easy" it is, but it's pretty much at the top of every "most stolen" list.
