New Toyota Corolla Cross revealed as fresh-faced (sub-RAV4) SUV!

Toyota has whipped the covers off its new Corolla Cross in Thailand, describing the newcomer as a fresh-faced “compact SUV” forming part of its broader Corolla series.

While sales will commence immediately in Thailand, the Japanese firm says the new Corolla Cross will be launched in a “growing number of other markets going forward”.

“By adding a new model to the Corolla series to suit the growing demand of SUVs, the enhanced Corolla line-up enables customers to select the model that better suits their diverse lifestyles and life stages,” the firm said.

Running on the TNGA (GA-C) platform with a wheelbase of 2 640 mm, the new Corolla Cross measures 4 460 mm long, 1 825 mm and 1 620 mm tall, which sees it slot in above the C-HR and below the RAV4.

In Thailand, the Corolla Cross is offered with a choice of two powertrains. The first is a naturally aspirated 1,8-litre petrol unit, delivering 103 kW and 177 N.m to the front axle via a continuously variable transmission. The second is a hybrid version of the same (detuned) four-cylinder unit, with a total system output of 90 kW.

UPDATE: Toyota South Africa Motors has told CARmag.co.za it is "unable to confirm any more details at this point", adding “Toyota's product portfolio is vast and we are currently investigating a number of different models for local introduction, however we cannot confirm the specific details at this stage".

Different markets have a different line of cars.

So off the top of my head from a Euro-land prospective:

- Yaris Cross (not out yet)
- C-HR
- Rolla Cross (not out yet)
- RAV4
- Land Cruiser Prado
- Land Cruiser 200

SA, Oz & Asian markets gets the Tuna as well, Euro markets don't.

Australia gets the Kluger.

US gets the Venza.

That baby fortuner thing is definitely being discontinued soon, there's a good reason you forget it's name, no one is interested. It's called a Rush.

I think it's nice, they will do well not to call it the Corolla Cross when it comes over, get a good name for it.

Corolla Cross: Is this 'baby Rav' the new car Toyota plans to build in SA?

Earlier this year, when Toyota announced plans to invest R2.4 billion in building a new passenger car in South Africa, one of its executives hinted that this new vehicle would form part of the company’s new ‘Corolla strategy’.

Until now, that strategy has seen the nameplate expand to include both premium hatch and sedan models as well as the budget-beating Quest that’s based on the previous generation. But now, with Toyota having unveiled an SUV version of the Corolla in Thailand, we’re wondering if this isn’t perhaps the vehicle that Toyota SA plans to build at its Prospecton plant in KZN.

It would certainly make sense, given the way our market is shifting towards SUVs.

Toyota SA remains tight-lipped about its future product plans, and when asked about the Corolla Cross, a representative said:

“Toyota's product portfolio is vast and we are currently investigating a number of different models for local introduction, however we cannot confirm the specific details at this stage.
