So, sounds like the forum expits are putting TCL first and for the next few years. Is it also Google TV based? - if so, winner for me.

I think my local Chinese supermarket will need a visit..
I don't think you will find these in your local Chinese shop. Their distribution network is mainly Takelot, Makro, Incredible etc. But i see they are starting to open brand shops. First one opening at Fourways mall soon.

Is possible, in my case thinking of Mr. Panda in the casual "Oriental City" trade centre just north of Eastgate - massive shop, they've got amazing direct import bargains, many high quality. Did see some TV's there but didn't check the details.

It's not a "TV TV", there's no TV tuner. Yes it has sort of "TV capabilities" but doesn't require a TV license. The premise I went with was a "TV TV that requires a TV License." since your premise was "can still pay 10 years of TV license and just buy a TV".

The OS on the thing doesn't matter to me because set top box and just use it as a monitor and also no TV License.

they still call it a smart TV in their own description - pardon me for taking their word for it 😉

Soo many hassles with LG tvs, especially their power supplies thats very problematic.

Ended up buying Hisense Mini LED TVs its between Samsung OLED and that one, and honestly very happy with it. Bought 2x 85 inch models and then a smaller 43 inch one.

So sick of these threads. Most everyone just chooses Samsung, all things considered.

The 4k that streamers send us, isn't really 4k anyway, the bitrate is low, the audio is compressed as well. It's barely bluray bit rate for video. Also as stated where does the 4k content come from? Studios need to be creating it to send out, a lot of stuff for broadcasters is still 1080p at most.
Netflix, Prime and such their own catalogues are 4k and very little else really.

We get a lot from Sky. We could easily have the World Cup, Premier League and F1 in 4K.

DSTV invested millions in a 4K capable truck which showed the SA20 final live in 4K without issue a few years ago, so we could technically have one major local match per weekend in 4K like an SA20 match or Protea local game or local Springbok match etc.

That’s enough to start. But sadly Canal Ploes doesn’t think 4K is important to the Africans

Yes I know. And you are correct... it's a "TV"

My point was "don't need TV license" and that seemed to be your reason for buying a "TV TV" (with tuner that requires a TV license). I'm just trying to highlight that there are more options now that don't need TV Licenses that are not insanely expensive like the previous "large monitor and set top box" solution.

4k costs a lot, you really think local games would be able to afford the equipment? Not every match is 4k, plus people already moan DSTV is expensive, now you want them to pay more for rights?

Not necessarily true anymore...
The problem with these is the quality of the panel. They are cheap entry level garbage.
Don't get me wrong it is wonderful that these exist and I also have one at home (a 55" Mercer thing), however it doesn't compare to the technology that is happening in TCL, Hisense, Samsung and LG panels. Those are far superior in terms of picture quality. As soon as you want mini-led with dimming zones, RGB, etc etc etc to enjoy your content at the highest fidelity then these just don't perform at all.

But for the average alexander that don't care they are perfect.

I probably wouldn't buy an LG that wasn't an OLED, they've just never been that good regardless of their reliability. I've had good experience with their OLEDs though.

It is what it is. I don't watch all that much TV... So I just wanted something that could replace my old HD ready piece of poop without having to have a TV license. And with their pricing I figured like R5k for a 50 inch it cannot be WORSE than the old TV I had. lol. So even though it's not "top tier" it's far better than I had and at it's price I would gladly replace it with the same one if it died.

In a few generations they might be competing with the "big brands".

it wasn't the reason - the person i was correcting had said

Save your money and DON'T buy a smart TV

and my point was that you cannot save the money because dedicated non TV monitors are way more expensive than TVs - the TV license thing was to demonstrate the point further it was not the sole point like you are trying to make it out to be

My bad. I misunderstood your initial intention.
