Rain and storm for Cpt pt 2

Interesting that despite not being a very wet winter so far the dam levels are higher than last year:

We had a monster storm in May when exceptional rainfall in the catchment areas lifted dam levels by 19% in one week. Average rainfall away from the mountains has been much lower than average.

Talking about that deluge, footage from the Breede River show incredible volumes of water, and unprecented rise in flood levels:

Looks like a nice cold front is hitting us from early Sunday morning. Expecting some white fluff on the mountain peaks as well.

The model runs are quite fickle, showing rapid intensification before landfall, but hard to pinpoint the specifics. Either way it is likely to be wet, windy, and cold on Sun 28th into Mon 29th.

There was persistent heavy rain in Kenilworth for most of Sunday, tapering off somewhat in the afternoon, and stopping around sunset. The Milnerton webcam (above) showed significantly less rain away from the mountain.

The SAEON Dwarsberg mountain catchment station recorded an impressive 170mm in the period up to midnight. The current temperature (at 1200m elevation) is 1.5C, indicating that light snow fell overnight.

There was probably some good runoff during this period, but the DWS website is offline for maintenance, so I cannot check any figures. The CoCT levels will eventually show rises in the dam levels.

The rest of the week will be very cold, with light snow over the mountains, with light rain at times. A moderate intensity cold-core cutoff-low will develop along the southern Cape coast on Thurs 2nd, details to follow.

Edit: The SAWS reports widespread moderate rain over the SW-Cape during the 24 hours to 8am on Mon 29th. Highest include Kirstenbosch 85mm, Franschhoek 52mm, Grabouw 52mm, Ceres 44mm, Molteno Reservoir (CBD) 44mm, Bellville 43mm, Villiersdorp 43mm, etc.

It was a bit chilly last night. First time I felt the cold this year, so I think it's time to put on my winter bedding.
