DStv stream quality seems stuck at 576p.

Well I'm on fiber, so the buffer pause is minute. But it would appear that it's 576p. So what the **** is going on?

Edit: So eveeeeentually it goes up to 720p
The pause is an app feature I reckon. I'm envious, I could really use some 720p on my tablet, warts and all.

Trying to watch some live sport on DSTV is so terrible.

Supposedly the settings allow for Up to 1080P

Yet after doing some digging, these are the only options available:
Vid *CENC 1024x576 | 1500 Kbps | avc1.4D401F
Vid *CENC 768x432 | 800 Kbps | avc1.4D401E
Vid *CENC 640x360 | 400 Kbps | avc1.4D401E

Aud *CENC 64 Kbps | mp4a.40.2 | 2CH

This is SuperSport Grandstand - Absolutely garbage and makes sense why people sail the high seas...

Change browsers.

Change browsers.
I have tried Firefox, Chrome and Edge, as well as Brave - All the same 1024x576 | 502 Kbps

When Showmax was still around, I could get full 1080P, but DSTV Stream seems to be stuck on 576P

I'm on linux so all browsers are nerfed for streaming most of the time.
I think those type of source restrictions apply to any OS?

But mostly interested to hear how you get your DStv stream now, given that Multichoice no longer allow any open source based devices to use it.
I'm using a Gnome virtual box on my Ubuntu with stripped-down Win 10 & Edge.

Nope Edge allowed higher resolution, honestly I've not tried on my laptop for awhile, I use my phone to stream things in the background.

I think we can be fairly certain to say that it's not "stuck", but restricted to 576p on phones and tablets. I suspect laptops as well.

I have been unable to find ANY way to get a higher stream than 576p - Even for Catch-up content...

I get more than 576p on my phone and tablet, those have an app not the browser though. Laptops would use a browser and it could be a browser restriction

Sounds like an attempt to get more to use their app. Typical..

You should be using the app on phone and tablet? Why would you use the browser?
I wouldn't, but free choice and all that. I'm thinking more about laptop / pc use

Multichoice are certainly manipulative, as we know.

Even Netflix, Prime and and?
DRM is one of the reasons

Industry is manipulative 🤷‍♂️

Even with good reason like copyright protection, the circumstances stink. As one guy said (your Reddit link) , he would rather go back to collecting BluRays

Personally just want 720p, and MC don't usually give that iro my browser.

There's some strange / unknown business reasoning too.

Back on the DStv forum, about 10 years ago one of our Forumites here decided to do an analysis on MC's streaming. He's highly qualified and experienced in the telecommunications industry.

Long story short; he determined that a certain server in CT on route was the cause of the bottleneck issues then, and that it had no critical purpose, so he recommended to them that they take it out of the routing.

Sure enough, streaming performance improved quite a lot. All was good for about 3 months, then problems started up again, so he checked again, and.... found that they had included the CT server in the routing again.
Naturally, he gave up.

Nope they won't give you that in a browser :-) but blurays do give waaaay better quality.
