End of an era for DStv

DStv customers in South Africa have lost access to virtually all major HBO and first-run Warner Bros. Discovery shows, which its new owner attributed to ongoing licensing and distribution agreements.

These customers will no longer find popular HBO series like House of the Dragon available on live DStv channels like M-Net or on Catch Up.

DStv cuts premium shows from its flagship channel

"Cuts" makes it sound like it was their choice.

hahahaha reading the comments in this thread shows how sadly non-existent the imagination of these journalists are.

I have sympathy for the Premium users who have stuck it out with DSTV but the reality is that their time is over. With Multichoice having sold out to corporate greed, the reality is Canal+ has zero loyalty to Premium users. The days of Premium users getting the first and best are over, it's a declining market area. It's now the age of revenue generation and making sure that revenue increases year on year. That means focus on the untapped lower market which Multichoice ignored for decades and lead to this point. Rugby, cricket and most importantly soccer are the advertising generating sports and everything else will be of poorer quality. Premium user are going to have to face the reality that they are now back of the line because they are the smaller market. Make no mistake I take great delight in watching Multichoice roll in the mud because of it's bad choices and consequences of their own actions but the South African tv landscape is going to get a lot worse before it gets better for the high end user

Losing HBO is a bitter pill to swallow. In addition to losing other channels, one wonders why Canal + is allowing the Premium sub. package to lose its value offering. And if you don't watch any sports, you might start to wonder what's the point of having it.

I was a premium subscriber a long time ago. I feel so smug about all the money I have not spent on DSTV in the last 12 years or so. In fact I noticed a few months ago that my TV is not in the lounge anymore but one of my kids has claimed it, that's how low my interest is.

It's a normal development with modern entertainment options and issues, but I'm not convinced this is set in stone.

Isn't the Warner Bros. Disc. sale issue and adjustments still going on?
Weren't we told that Canal+ has good relationships with WBD?

Where is this coming from exactly? The article tells us....

News of the latest shake-up at DStv first came from veteran broadcasting journalist Thinus Ferreira, reporting for News24, citing an M-Net insider.

MyBroadband asked DStv’s owner, Groupe Canal+, for confirmation. It provided a generic statement about ongoing licensing and distribution agreements affecting the availability of shows.
“The availability of individual series, like House of the Dragon, is subject to ongoing studio licensing and distribution agreements,” the Canal+-owned MultiChoice Group said.

“There is nothing further to announce at this stage, and any updates will be shared through the usual channels.”

Lol.
So... nothing to see here at this stage.
