Concern around SABC's lack of finalised funding

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has highlighted that the lack of a finalised funding model has left it with persistent liquidity constraints and going-concern risks.

Presenting before Parliament on Friday, 26 June 2026, the broadcaster warned that it would struggle to secure short-term liquidity or invest in the content needed to attract more viewers.

Doesn't matter. The high court ruled it is a fundamental constitutional right to have Isidingo beamed into your house.

This Court is seized with Part A of that decision. The issue for determination is whether to cut off millions of people from access to television or whether they should retain that access pending the outcome of the applicant’s review. Their constitutional right to freedom of expression, so the applicants submit, which includes freedom to receive information will be irreparably harmed. They submit further that with interim relief government will maintain the status quo for a while longer until an expedited determination of the applicants’ review. The harm that would be caused by not granting interim relief would be more catastrophic that any potential harm to the respondents.

Put it all behind a pay system, if you want it pay for it, they will soon see that the people who want it "can't" or wont pay for it and the rest just don't want it. It was always going to fail to make people pay for something they don't use. Decades ago people had no choice on what to watch now there are many many options.

The court itself isn't known for making bright decisions, they could easily use e-TV to ensure that the information they want disseminated gets out, SABC is just a quick buck and a propaganda machine for them.

Oh I have no doubt the constitutional court would have the same outcome. They recently decided that the right to housing actually means you have a right to a house in whatever area you want.
