Have you ever been scammed?

If so, tell us your story.
 
When I was heavily into marine/coral reef keeping I bought from a supplier, whom I regularly bought from, a skimmer and a chiller worth R12 500. In 2006 +- this was a fair whack of money.

He never supplied and disappeared.

Lots of people/shops/suppliers in the hobby were looking for him. One day we went to look at a puppy we wanted to get and it was through his wife. He wasn't there at the time.

So I had his wife's cell number and his address. So I went on and advised everyone including shops and main suppliers, where he stays and a cell number. I also put his details on the two main marine keeping web sites in SA (before POPIA)

I never took it further but also I have never paid upfront or a deposit for anything again since.

Is that the puppy in your profile pic? I think you got scammed there too.
 
in 2022 i bought something online from Pc Link Computers and i stupidly didnt first check on Hellopeter . i never got the item .

FNB tried to reverse it but the source account was kept empty

that was the only time i was scammed

i have over the years received multiple scam calls for example from 'Vodacom' saying i won a car + 10000 cash + a pre loaded card with R2000 on it ( thats the give away sign nobody wins 3 prizes )
 
International scammer called "Bad Cow" took my scam reports to SpamCop personally (I called him a paedo) and launched an attack, included him purchasing over R20K of European flights on my credit card. Got it all back.
 
Closest we've come is recently, remedial teacher we were referred to by a doctor insisted on full payment upfront, then repeatedly cancelled the lessons. Refused a refund.

Waiting on sheriff to deliver letter of demand before small claims court.
 
Many, many years ago, I had bought some blank cds from a computer mania, and was walking to my car. A chap approached me in the parking lot saying he was a delivery driver for them, and was selling some monitors out of the back of his truck.

Thought I was gonna score a monitor for around R500, he gave me his car keys and wallet and told me to meet him out back in 15 min, after I had paid him upfront ofcourse.

Needless to say he never pitched, and on closer inspection the wallet was empty, and the keys were not from a delivery vehicle.

Was a good life lesson, and I haven't been scammed since, although there were a few close calls.
 
Yeah - was looking for a Unifi AP and there was a seller advertising for a U6 (not here and not on carbonite - big mistake i know) - paid over 1.8k and nothing was ever delivered

sometimes you need to get scammed just once to prepare you for the future ones . hard but good lesson to learn
 
Yes, they used a girl number to tell me about a job scam in the Eastern Cape province, deposited R300 and went there the following day, only to be met with a tsotsi looking guy, tell me I should give him R600 so he would buy electrical cable for the one room i would be renting but i refused , entered the shop then i told him i will be the one paying ended up leaving the store saying this things are costly, then my guard went up we walked up until we were at Shoprite liquor and he told me to buy a bottle of Hennessey he will refund me after we reached to the house and i said no, he managed to disappear by telling me he was going the capitec ATM, then when i was looking for him no where to be seen, got a call later to give a security guard from Shoprite liquor then i called them later to fetch the money waited 30 minutes without them arriving luckily it was still 2pm afternoon went back home to Durban just imagine.
 
scammed by a business partner late 90s.
way too much blind trust in him.

he slowly but surely siphoned company funds - a significant amount in total.
as a result company could not pay its debts, and thus could not pay me - resulting in me being unable to pay my own debts.

this culminated in me returning home one evening to find the front door of the house plastered with legal documents.
opened the front door to discover the sheriff of the court had been - and emptied the house, even removing a fitted gaggenau oven.
everything gone , only bed, bedding, linen, curtains and clothing remained.
turns out a creditor had quietly obtained an urgent judgement & attachment order.

the order itself was based on lies and deception stating i intended leaving the country within 48hrs, and was already busy packing everything to ship out - which was complete nonsense
 
my wife booked holiday accommodation at Warner Beach in 2012. Paid the deposit...... Left Pretoria at around 03:00 on 24 December. When we arrived there were numerous other families (some as far as Nelspruit)

Obviously couldn't find accommodation on the 24th..... Was back home at around 19:00...... fridges were empty, so it was a boring Christmas day...... My son was 2, and my daughter 12....... Spent a lot of time in the car that day..... Some people on here actually helped to get more information on the scammer.....

anyway..... bygones
