Man scammed out of R1.07 million over a phone call

The Hawks on Thursday welcomed the prosecution of two scammers who stole R1.07 million from an Eastern Cape man over a phone call and allegedly tried to use Hollywoodbets to launder the money.

Sibusiso Mabaso (34) and Lethulwazi Wandile Mnguni (33) were sentenced to five years' imprisonment, wholly suspended on the condition that they are not convicted of fraud during the period.

The courts love proving that crime does pay and rather well don't they, they couldn't recover R273,437 and made them pay back R105 000 back, so a net profit of R168 437 and no prison time, if I am reading this correctly. Given the convictions they can still get jobs in government

You did read that correctly. I went through it slowly in disbelief, thinking I must have missed something.
This is f**ing retarded.

You can get into more k@k if you light a cigarette inside a Spur.

Strike 1 - "and persuaded him to transfer funds from the family trust account into his savings account,”
Strike 2 - "Simultaneously, they induced him to disclose the One-Time Passwords (OTPs) required to authenticate electronic banking transactions"
Strike 3 - "The scammers instructed the victim to deactivate his phone for approximately two hours"

Someone this stupid had over a liquid million to steal.
I almost feel personally attacked.

I get that it's sometimes too easy to blame victims of these crimes due to the human brain malfunctioning when panicked, but my goodness, surely there was enough time during all of this to sit down for 5 minutes and just think think this through or reach out to someone, anyone, for a 2nd opinion.
