No new disc games on PlayStation from January 2028

I don't know why some people are defending Sony here, even if you are pro-digital I don't see how a digital only future is good for either side.
No we're just applying common sense and logic instead of going full rage mode. Why would a company continue with the added costs and logisitical issues of disc based releases when the vast majority of people are fine with digital (and the disc releases heavily rely on the digital infrastructure anyway with all the patches and updates that come along these days).

Then the ragers threaten to go back to PC gaming, which has been digital only for at least a decade. It's soo ****ing dumb. It seems that digital only future has been fine for PC gamers so far, don't see anybody complaining about not being able to sell their games.

You putting all your trust in a company that pulled about 500 movies and deleted them from people's libraries, after those people PAID for those movies. Interesting.

Rage? I'm angry, big difference. My anger is understandable though.

People like Herr der Verboten who actually do rage and defend Sony's actions make no sense. What difference does it make to you. You are just defending a conglomerate who doesn't care one iota about you. It's all about profit.

As someone mentioned, it's like Sony is paying you to be so emotional.
Actually makes zero difference to me, I don't buy many games these days but those that I do are digital.

I'm just pointing out common sense, instead of trying to use 4 year old sales data and (ironically) digital petitions to make it seem like discs still matter.

Interesting survey found on Eurogamer. Over 320.000 votes. Still only 29 % who go strictly digital. 22 % die-hard physical. But the rest is also still in the market for discs and cards.

I don't trust buying movies or series on any platform (all of that I pirate). But that doesn't always work well for gaming. I am not aware of any mass game removals on any of the major platforms so it is just a hypothetical. Games licensing works differently than movies or series so I think any games being removed would be singular rather than mass removals. Having the disc in this scenario doesn't necessarily help, online portion of the game would be useless, any important updates would also not be available (plus if they really wanted to they could release an OS update and block the discs as well).

On the flip side, if your house burnt down then every single disc game would be lost, but digital purchases would still be available. Also scratches and disc rot are an issue. Physical discs aren't some magical answer to ownership.

Data from the massive internal Insomniac Games leak shows that 31 out of 33 PlayStation first-party titles sold more physical copies than digital copies.

Sony's public financial reports frequently highlight that digital transactions account for roughly 78% to 85% of their total sales via digital in 2022 which they now claim is 95%.

The leaked internal documents reveal that single-player, narrative-driven blockbuster games heavily favor physical disc purchases.

• Uncharted 4: A Thief's End: 83% Physical
• Sackboy: A Big Adventure: 77% Physical
• Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart: 76% Physical
• God of War Ragnarök: 76% Physical
• Demon's Souls Remake: 70% Physical
• Marvel's Spider-Man+Miles Morales: 66% Physical
• The Last of Us Part II: 61% Physical

Public metrics calculating high digital volume pool together free-to-play titles, microtransactions, DLC, PS Plus games and digital-only games.

Because roughly 85% of the PlayStation library consists of indie or digital-only titles, it skews the broader metrics.

When a major game is offered in both formats, consumers heavily buy discs and Sony doesn't include how many times a disc is activated on a different console/account.

I would bet money this is fake news.....

You guys are throwing out that term ragers a lot hey, but is seems you and @Herr der Verboten are quite angry about this discussion.

Allow me to add my 2 cents.

I almost only buy digitally, Series S by default and Nintendo out of general preference. An all digital future wouldn't bother me as I am basically there anyway.

However, I have picked up physical games cheaper when on random sales. Super Mario 3D World and Metroid Prime 4 at about 50% off being noteworthy examples. So I do have a couple physical games and would like the option to pick up physical.

These digital stores will 100% be anticonsumer and overcharge the moment their storefront is the only way you can buy a game.

I am not collector but appreciate that many others are and want to preserve games. While I am fine with digital, I also understand that physical options still benefit me.

Without guarantees for the consumer, absolutely do not trust the platforms to not screw us over.

I would lay of the glue... it is making you think things there is not, but whatever gets you hard if you can still go hard.

thanks for the laffs seeing your doffness. please keep them coming, there is always a new level 0.

They're trying to make it stick. But they can't because there is a difference between controlled anger and rage, which is out of control anger, which ironically Herr himself has displayed several times in this thread.

People are angry and disappointed.

But I think Nintendo is the outlier here - if your fears are anticonsumerism and trust, that becomes harder when there is a single store and we don't have that do we?

And you just joined the rational side of the debate.

As you say, imagne only being able to buy games from a couple places, prices will skyrocket because there is no choice.

A full on AAA title from Sony is a good R1500 -> R2000 on launch. The costs with how shipping and manufacturing are these days is quite trivial.

(and the disc releases heavily rely on the digital infrastructure anyway with all the patches and updates that come along these days).

This is a fault of the system, not the user. However in most cases you can almost take a single player disc, pop it in, and play it offline. Would you want to? Probably not. But you can.

Then the ragers threaten to go back to PC gaming, which has been digital only for at least a decade. It's soo ****ing dumb.

I agree on this part, it makes no sense to me either.

It seems that digital only future has been fine for PC gamers so far, don't see anybody complaining about not being able to sell their games.

I accept that when I buy something on Steam that one day that line item in my Steam library may disappear. I do not believe I have ownership of that game, and I would consider myself delusional if I did.

I also know I can go to GOG and buy DRM-free games. There is somewhat ownership there being able to download the install files and keep them without worrying about some corporate overload revoking a license from me.

I also know that with the PC I can choose which store my money goes to. There is somewhat of a choice on the platform.

However with Sony, there will now only be one choice, and you have to play by their rules and pricing - both which are quite crap. Take a look at their refund policy, or library sharing. It is nothing like Steam. This is why people are upset. The least they could have done is put some effort into their policies with the PS store before killing off something people actually used for very good reasons.

I would also like to add that a large part of my gaming is digital and on other platforms for the most part. But even though this doesn't affect me the most, I am not blinded by fandom to see a problem where there is a problem.

And choice is what we are losing. If I have no choice anyway then I'd rather do that on PC than with Sony, they WILL exploit their this to their end, the consumer WILL be the loser here.

I'll just say it again

If you don't like or agree with the direction the industry is going

Get a different hobby

It's not going backwards just for you

I love my Nintendo, but won't pretend that they don't overcharge. BotW at full price almost 10 years later says it all.

At least the Switch 2 has the cartridge and they have just started the consoles lifecyle so for the forseeable future there will be physical options. However debatable the Game Key Card is, at least random sales by retailers will enable us to pick up games cheaper.

However with Sony, there will now only be one choice, and you have to play by their rules and pricing - both which are quite crap.

But this is not true, the blog literally mentions retailers - so you would (presumably) be able to buy your codes from anywhere that stocks it.

Just like I can buy GTA6 on Amazon or other shops, even though it's digital.

This will also get them over regulatory hurdles, so I don't see why they won't do it...I'd rather wait and see before getting angry about it
