Evacuations were ordered Tuesday when a high-rise apartment complex in New York City was deemed to be structurally unstable and at risk of collapse after its support columns started buckling.

The area surrounding the 37-story building, in midtown Manhattan near Grand Central Terminal, was evacuated after two structural support columns on its 21st floor began to buckle around 8 a.m.


Mayor Zohran Mamdani and other city officials addressed reporters nearby, saying the building was still unstable as of Tuesday afternoon.

The building, formerly home to Pfizer’s global headquarters, is being converted into a 1,500-unit luxury rental complex. The Department of Buildings says it has an active construction permit.

The fire department said it got a call around 8 a.m. about bricks falling from the building at 235 E. 42nd St., between Second and Third avenues. The police department said it got a 911 call less than 15 minutes later.

Police said they were told that construction workers on the 21st floor saw the columns beginning to collapse.

NY crumbling as soon as Mamdani took over. What did the voters expect ?
 
I am betting some wagie decided to remove a column because it was interfering with the plumbing, electrics or Feng shui.

33 floor building plus 4 additional floors. Did someone fudge up calculations at some point?

Cliff Johnson of Steamfitters Local 638, who was working inside the building, told PIX11 News that his members were inside when the structure began to fail.

“The general contractor chose to go non‑union for this project. All we want is responsible construction in the City of New York,” Johnson said. “They did not shore up the job correctly. The beams started crumbling, the floors started crumbling, and they might have to evacuate the other side.”


Johnson said the project was a total renovation, with crews gutting the 33‑story building and planning to add another 16 stories.

They have propped it, so it won't fall down any further. They will likely have to prop it all the way down as well.


But I think the building is f__ked. Likely this is a stopgap so they can do a controlled demolition. I mean what are you going to do? Jack it up and hope the slabs are not completely f__ked?
