Next GWM Tank 300 revealed

Sporting an increase in dimensions and a new PHEV powertrain option, the next GWM Tank 300 has been revealed.

Introduced to South Africa in plug-in hybrid (PHEV) guise in 2024, with the highly anticipated 2.4-litre turbodiesel engine option following in 2025, GWM has revealed the next Tank 300 on social media. Although the Chinese automaker has remained tight-lipped about the new generation, publication Kuai Technology has reported the latest iteration of GWM’s Toyota Fortuner and Ford Everest rival features larger dimensions and gains a new PHEV powertrain option.

The next Tank 300’s bodywork measures 4 886 mm in length and 1 984 mm in width; making it 126 mm longer and 54 mm wider than the current model. The new Tank 300 is taller, too – 1 927 vs 1 903 mm. In addition, the wheelbase has been stretched, by 260 to 3 010 mm. Exterior design changes remain subtle, with perhaps the most notable coming in the shape of ‘Tank’ lettering on the front grille.

The GWM Tank 300 has been given a substantial facelift. Here’s a look at what’s changed for the updated model.

Official images of the GWM Tank 300 facelift have been published by Great Wall Motors, giving us a good look of what’s changed. Sadly, there are no interior images yet and we assume GWM will release them along with specifications very soon.

Visually, it’s unmistakably a Tank 300 but the front badges have been changed. The Tank T-badge has been replaced by capitalised lettering spelling out TANK. The front bumper now has towing recovery points as well as fasteners. If you look closely, there’s a slight bulge where the top of the windscreen meets the roof, and we presume this to be a camera or radar for assisted driving.

In March 2026, we reported that the GWM Ora 5 compact SUV is heading to our market, with the local lineup set to include three powertrain options – internal combustion engine-only (ICE), hybrid (HEV), and battery-electric (BEV). The Ora 5 has now officially arrived in South Africa, with the range comprising six derivatives.

The ICE-only Ora 5 is powered by a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 105 kW and 210 N.m of torque – the latter exclusively delivered to the front wheels via a dual-clutch transmission. GWM claims an average fuel consumption of 7.15 L/100 km. The HEV variant pairs the latter, 1.5-litre mill with a single electric motor, fed by a 1.09 kWh battery. The petrol-electric Ora 5 produces a healthier 164 kW and 476 N.m. The Ora 5 BEV is equipped with a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous electric motor developing 150 kW and 260 N.m of torque. The Chinese automaker says the BEV derivative’s 58.33 kWh NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) battery pack offers an operating range of up to 520 km on a single, full charge.

The new GWM Ora 5 has officially launched in South Africa, offered with a choice of 3 distinct powertrains: turbopetrol, traditional hybrid and fully electric.

At launch, the local Ora 5 line-up comprises as many as 6 front-wheel-drive derivatives, with each of the aforementioned powertrain options available in conjunction with both the Chinese brand’s Super Luxury and Ultra Luxury grades.

GWM ORA 5 arrives in SA: One design, three drivetrains and shockingly good pricing

Technology

The ORA 5 features GWM's latest Coffee OS infotainment system, centred around a dual-screen layout that combines the digital instrument cluster and infotainment display.

The system supports smartphone integration, voice control and updated graphics, while the interface has been designed to provide quicker access to vehicle functions and connectivity features.

Safety

Six airbags are fitted to every model, and a suite of advanced driver assistance systems aimed at improving driver awareness and reducing the risk of collisions. These include a range of active safety technologies that support the driver in different road and traffic conditions.

Warranty

The ORA 5 comes with a seven-year/200,000km warranty. Hybrid and electric models receive an eight-year/150,000km high-voltage battery warranty, while all derivatives include a seven-year/75,000km service plan.

Service intervals are scheduled every 12 months or 15,000km, and seven years of roadside assistance is included.
