More than 100 South African devices hitch a ride on Elon Musk’s latest mission to orbit

Precision satellite components manufactured in the Western Cape were onboard the Falcon 9 rocket on SpaceX's latest Transporter-17 mission, South African satellite maker NewSpace Systems confirmed.

On 7 July, the Falcon 9 blasted into the air from the Space Launch Complex 4E at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, United States.

According to a LinkedIn post from NewSpace Systems, nine companies for which it manufactures satellite components were on board the Transporter-17 mission.

“There’s something special about watching hardware that started life in our facilities lift off on a rocket and begin its journey to orbit. It never gets old,” the company said.

More than 100 NewSpace Systems products were onboard the Falcon 9 for the mission, including South African-made Reaction Wheels, Sun Sensors, Magnetorquer Rods, and Magnetometers.

In March, NewSpace Systems, which is based in Somerset West, announced the opening of its South African manufacturing hub, a sprawling 5,200m² facility, which is the largest on the continent.
