South Africa must kiss Mathematics Literacy goodbye

well if they were weaker students they probably not going to get into the STEM subjects in university anyway
 
I nearly stopped reading when I read Phakeng's name but then continued and it seems she wants everyone to focus on Maths. That is not going to happen.

In my experience, so many kids (even middle class or a bit above) in my son's private school struggle with maths at my son's school because simply their parents don't find enough time (some parents are genuinely busy of course) to sit with their kids at home on a regular basis. In my opinion, kids need lot of parental help at least till grade 7-8.

If I recall, Maths is not really compulsory subject (at A level) in UK but specific GCSE levels are required for entry in Medical field.

She argued that if Mathematical Literacy had never been introduced, it would not have created a problem of learners moving away from Mathematics.

Instead of moving children away from Mathematics when they struggle with it, schools should encourage them to spend more time on the subject to improve.

She advocated for changing the incentive structures for schools to reward them for achieving good Mathematics results.
