Verdict

The new Mercedes-Benz CLA200 is a highly appealing, visual tour de force that successfully keeps the premium sedan alive. It drives beautifully, offers superb ride refinement, and features a cabin that sets a new benchmark for digital integration in this class. The sheer sophistication of its drivetrain calibration demonstrates that German engineering still holds a significant advantage over its emerging rivals in the ICE space.

However, forking out nearly R1 million for a 1.5-litre engine that delivers merely adequate performance is a tough pill to swallow. While the cabin technology and exterior drama will easily win over style-conscious buyers, those seeking true performance may want to wait for the hotter AMG derivatives to arrive on local shores.

The Mercedes-Benz CLA 200 is a seductive-looking sedan that keeps the segment relevant.

The cabin refinement, driving characteristics and digital offering are almost unmatched in this class.

The way that the oily bits combine is as close to perfect as you’re likely to get, which I reckon is what 140-years of making cars brings to the party.

Whether South Africans, who stubbornly insist on SUVs, will be swayed remains to be seen because it faces the additional challenge of convincing them to pay R1-million for a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine that’s willing but not exceptionally dynamic.

The fully electric version of the new Mercedes-Benz CLA – officially badged as the CLA 250+ with EQ technology – has touched down in South Africa, offering a claimed single-charge range of nearly 800 km.

Yes, the German brand’s local division has quietly added the new C174-series electric vehicle (EV) to its configurator, a little over 2 months after the petrol-powered (with mild-hybrid assistance) version of the 3rd-generation sedan launched in Mzansi.

The CLA 250+ with EQ technology features a rear-mounted electric motor generating 200 kW and 335 Nm. According to Mercedes-Benz, these peak outputs facilitate a 0-100 kph sprint in 6.7 seconds and a maximum speed of 210 kph.

This electric powertrain features an 85 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt battery pack, which the Stuttgart-based firm says offers a single-charge range of between 694 and 792 km (using the WLTP standard). The maximum AC and DC charging capacities are 11 kW and 320 kW, respectively, though the former number can be optionally increased to 22 kW (for some R13 000).

The Mercedes-Benz CLA 250+ with EQ Technology is equipped with a single, rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous electric motor producing 200 kW and 335 N.m of torque. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a two-speed automatic transmission. The German marque claims the CLA 250+ completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 6.7 seconds, before topping out at 210 km/h.

The CLA 250+’s 800 V electric architecture features an 85 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery, which serves up a claimed operating range of up to 792 km on a single, full charge. The Three-pointed Star brand says the CLA250+’s NMC battery can receive up to 320 kW at a DC fast charger, with a 10-minute charge at such a facility adding up to 325 km of range. The Stuttgart automaker claims an energy consumption of 14.1-12.2 kWh/100 km.
