New Mercedes-Benz CLA appears in shadowy teaser image

Mercedes-Benz has released a shadowy teaser image of the upcoming second-generation CLA, confirming the new model will make its global debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in the second week of January 2019.

Of course, the Stuttgart-based firm has already revealed its A-Class Sedan, but the new CLA is expected to slot in above this model, setting itself apart with a sleeker design (particularly in terms of its roofline) and a higher price, too.

The Daimler-backed brand has yet to reveal what sort of engines will power the new CLA, although it seems likely the powerplant range will draw on that of the A-Class hatch and sedan. For the record, the latter can be fitted with a 1,5-litre turbodiesel (in the A180d), a 1,3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol unit (in the A200) and a 2,0-litre turbopetrol (in the A250).

Of course, it’s all but certain that Mercedes-AMG will get its hands on the latest CLA, with a CLA35 and a CLA45 on the cards.

So, why choose to unveil the new model at a tech event such as CES? Well, the upcoming CLA is expected to feature the latest version of the brand’s MBUX infotainment system, complete with “new functions” the automaker is keen to show off…

New 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLA hits wind tunnel ahead of January unveil

New CLA and CLA Shooting Brake will be revealed at next year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas

Mercedes-Benz is continuing to fine-tune the aerodynamic properties of its second-generation CLA less than a month ahead of a planned unveiling for the new four-door coupe at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Set for UK delivery next June, the 2019 model adopts all the various developments already seen on other new A-Class models, including a re-engineered version of its predecessor’s platform supporting both front- and four-wheel drive, and the choice of two different rear suspension systems.

Updated four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines also feature, as well as a contemporary interior boasting Mercedes' new MBUX operating system with digital instruments and touch screen infotainment functions, among a host of new equipment. A Shooting Brake estate variant will be unveiled later in the year.

Joining the recently unveiled A-Class Saloon as the second dedicated four-door model in an expanded eight-model-strong compact car line-up from the German car maker, the new CLA has grown in size and is now longer than a BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. Figures are not planned to be made official until its unveiling, but Mercedes-Benz officials confirm it is longer than the 4549mm long A-Class Saloon.

The added length is concentrated mainly within the wheelbase, providing scope for larger rear door apertures, easier access to the rear seat and improved interior packaging with greater rear legroom. Autocar was granted access to the new model, known internally under the codename C118, during a recent photoshoot at the brand's Stuttgart wind tunnel - featuring two-time ironman triathlon world champion, Jan Frodeno.

As with the first-generation CLA, it receives a coupe-like profile with a heavily curved roofline and short boot giving it a distinctly more cab back proportions than the more upright A-Class Saloon. While we are not able to reveal the new car in full, our exclusive photographs confirm the new CLA also adopts uniquely designed headlamps within a heavily tapered front end, a stretched six-window glasshouse intersected by wide B-pillars and wider haunches over the rear wheels.

All-new Mercedes CLA teased ahead of January debut

The teaser campaign for the next-generation CLA has officially kicked off with this darkened side shot, posted on Facebook by Mercedes-Benz ahead of the new model’s January 8 unveiling.

With the A-Class now having a conventional sedan variant, the CLA has the breathing space it needs to become more radical and coupe-like and although the teaser doesn’t give too much away, it does appear to have a more sloping, fastback roofline.

Beneath the skin, CLA will share much of its content with the A-Class hatch, including 1.33-litre and 2-litre turbocharged petrol engines, while CLA 35 and CLA 45 AMG versions are distinct possibilities further down the line.

Expect much of the cabin to be inherited from the A too, including the ‘artificial intelligence’ MBUX infotainment system, but our guess is that it will have an additional technological surprise or two up its sleeve.

Why do we think this? The CLA is making its debut at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, rather than a conventional motor show - and it’s surely not rocking up as ‘just a car’.

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLA Got a Hell of a Lot Nicer

Visually, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLA isn’t terribly different from the car that it replaces. But it’s bigger, has a nicer (looking) interior, and there’s a lot of tech on board. That and there is, tantalizingly, the prospect of a manual.

Unveiled at CES, the new CLA is apparently 48 mm longer, 53 mm wider and two mm lower than the previous generation, as published by Australian news outlet Redline. This means improved rear seat room, more legroom, and additional shoulder and elbow room.

Inside, you’ll recognize the basic setup from the new A Class, including the long screen from Mercedes’s new MBUX system. Driver assistance features include emergency braking, lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control.

The car that Mercedes has on the stand at CES is apparently the CLA250, which has a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-banger that puts out about 221 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.

And this is what’s most interesting, writes Redline:

A host of other powertrains will be available to customers when the CLA goes on sale later this year... The German brand says these powertrains will be paired to a mix of front and all-wheel-drive, and manual and automatic transmissions.

Huh, a new manual Mercedes! When was the last time anybody saw that happen? And if it’s true, will that option come to the U.S.?

The new Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupé is not only the most emotional vehicle in its class, it is also highly intelligent: From MBUX Interior Assist, which recognises operational demands from gestures and equips the interior with intelligence, through augmented reality for navigation and understanding indirect voice commands to the ENERGIZING COACH that provides individual fitness recommendations, the new CLA offers an array of clever solutions. There are also ingenious details when it comes to the aerodynamics and new functions for the Intelligent Drive driving assistance package. The design underlines the coupé character with its stretched form and design elements such as the bonnet with powerdomes or the rear licence plate which has been moved down. As such it does justice to its predecessor's status as a design icon.

With MBUX, Mercedes-Benz has been revolutionising how to operate a car and communicate with it since the launch of the A-Class. "Now we go to the next level with an intelligent interior assistance system for the compact class. By recognising gestures it facilitates natural operation," says Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. "This is not the only new feature by which the CLA offers a great deal of automotive intelligence."

The new generation of compacts has made a key contribution to the rejuvenation and image change of the Mercedes-Benz brand. The CLA is important for winning and retaining new customers in particular. The CLA Coupé was launched in the USA in 2013, making it the first compact Mercedes-Benz on the American market. At peak times, more than two thirds of CLA buyers in the USA came from competitors. On average, Mercedes-Benz CLA customers in the USA are around ten years younger than the typical Mercedes-Benz customer. In Europe, too, CLA customers are among the youngest in the Mercedes portfolio. In 2017, one in two customers in Europe previously drove a competitor's vehicle. Over 75 percent of European customers who previously drove a CLA as a coupé or Shooting Brake chose a Mercedes-Benz again for their next vehicle. In total, some 750,000 units of the first-generation CLA Coupé and CLA Shooting Brake contributed considerably to the compact car's success.

In its first year, the new CLA will also be available as an Edition 1. In terms of both the exterior and the interior, this limited edition special model has numerous visual accents which underline its exclusivity. The new CLA will be manufactured at the Kecskemét plant (Hungary) and comes onto the market in May 2019.

New Mercedes CLA to be sportiest compact yet in range

Bigger, tech-packed second-generation coupé will put dynamics to the fore and get a 404bhp flagship

Mercedes-Benz has promised that the second-generation CLA coupé, revealed at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas, will offer the sportiest driving dynamics of its new wave of compact cars.

The new four-door coupé is due to arrive in the UK in June. It is built on a re-engineered version of the previous car’s platform and uses technology from the latest A-Class.

Available with front- and four-wheel drive and the choice of two rear suspension systems, the new machine was displayed at CES in CLA250 guise, featuring a 221bhp four-cylinder 2.0-litre petrol engine, driven through a seven-speed automatic gearbox. The rest of the engine range is likely to mirror the A-Class, with 131bhp and 161bhp 1.3-litre petrols, a 187bhp version of the 2.0 petrol, a 114bhp 1.5 and 148bhp and 187bhp 2.0 diesels.

A decoupled multi-link rear axle will be offered, with active adaptive damping available as an option. Wheel sizes will range from 16in to 19in.

At 4688mm long and 1830mm wide, the new CLA is 48mm longer and 53mm wider than its predecessor, and its 2729mm wheelbase has been extended by 30mm. Mercedes said this, along with the car’s lower centre of gravity, helps to ensure it has improved driving dynamics. The new CLA has also been honed in the wind tunnel to have a drag coefficient of 0.23, very close to the previous car’s 0.22 Cd despite a larger frontal area.

In its design, the new CLA has echoes of the A-Class and other recent new Mercedes, but with an elongated bonnet featuring a sharply raked nose, uniquely designed flat headlights and a prominent ‘powerdome’ on the bonnet. The sloping coupé roofline is emphasised by frameless doors. The rear of the car features narrow tail-lights designed to make the vehicle appear even wider.

The car’s larger dimensions have resulted in a more spacious interior, with 17mm of extra head room, although leg room remains broadly similar to the previous model’s and the boot has shrunk by 10 litres to 460 litres.

The CLA has the youngest average customers of all Mercedes models, so the firm has focused on a high-tech theme for the interior. The dashboard features a centrally mounted touchscreen and no cowl, with a ‘trench’ splitting out the lower section. It also has the newest version of the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) system, including ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice recognition control.

A new interior assist system enables gesture control of certain functions and it is said the car can detect whether the driver or passenger is using the touchscreen and react accordingly. Gesturing towards the rear-view mirror can also control the reading light.

As with the A-Class, the CLA also receives driver assistance systems originally seen on the most recent S-Class, allowing the machine to drive semi-autonomously for the first time. The systems fitted include active brake, lane keeping and lane change assistance systems along with Pre-safe Plus, which can detect an imminent rear-end collision and prepare the car for it.

The CLA will be offered at launch as a limited-run Edition 1, featuring a number of visual tweaks. UK trim and specifications have yet to be determined. The car will be manufactured at Mercedes’ Kacskemet plant in Hungary.

A shooting brake estate is due to follow later this year. Mercedes performance arm AMG is also working on a range-topping CLA45 model, featuring the most highly tuned, 415bhp version of the M260 2.0-litre petrol engine. A 302bhp 2.0-litre CLA35 AMG is also planned.

New Mercedes-Benz CLA: second-generation model revealed!

The new Mercedes-Benz CLA has finally been revealed, with the Stuttgart-based automaker claiming the second-generation model has the “potential to become a modern design icon”.

Making its official debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the four-door CLA features the latest version of the brand’s MBUX system, complete with a fresh “interior assist” function that “recognises operational demands from gestures”.

It will be manufactured at the firm’s Kecskemét plant in Hungary, and is expected to launch in South Africa in the third quarter of 2019.

The CLA on display at CES 2019 is the CLA250 derivative, which employs a 2,0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine worth 165 kW and 350 N.m. This unit is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. However, Mercedes-Benz promises there will be a “broad range” of diesel and petrol engines available featuring manual or dual-clutch transmissions and all-wheel drive at a later stage.

The new CLA measures 4 688 mm long and 1 830 mm wide (increases over the original of 48 mm and 53 mm, respectively), while its height has been cut two millimetres to 1 439 mm. The wheelbase, meanwhile, grows some 30 mm to 2 729 mm. Boot capacity, interestingly, is down ten litres to 460.

The wider track (an extra 63 mm at the front and 55 mm more at the rear) and a lower centre of gravity contribute to what Mercedes-Benz describes as the “sportiest driving characteristics”, as does the decoupled multi-link arrangement at the rear.

An active adaptive damping system will be optionally available, while wheel sizes will start at 16 inches and go up to 19 inches (with tyre sizes starting at 205/60 R16 and culminating in 225/40 R19). Benz says the sleek sedan boasts the “very latest” driving assistance systems (adopted from the S-Class), including the ability to drive semi-autonomously in certain situations. It will furthermore be offered with the option of Multibeam LED headlamps.

Inside, the CLA shares various design elements with the latest A-Class, and its widescreen display is likewise free standing. The aforementioned “interior assist” system in the updated MBUX arrangement gives occupants the ability to, for example, turn on the reading lamp by briefly extending a hand towards the rear-view mirror. And if the driver reaches over towards the unoccupied front passenger seat in the dark, it will be illuminated automatically to make it easier to find any items that may have been left on the seat.

As has become customary with new Mercedes-Benz models, the CLA will be available in “Edition 1” guise (as pictured here) in its first year of production.

Mercedes-Benz CLA: Old vs New

The new Mercedes-Benz CLA was revealed in early 2019 and that got us thinking. How does it compare to the outgoing Mercedes-Benz CLA, which the South African market received back in 2016? We put them side by side.

When it was introduced globally back in 2013, the Mercedes-Benz CLA was well received. It was facelifted in 2016 and in that period more than 1 million units have been sold around the globe. The facelifted version also proved popular and tallied up an extraordinary number of sales. It was available in a number of flavours: petrol, diesel, AMG and in some markets, you could even get in a Shooting Brake estate body style.

2019 sees the all-new Mercedes-Benz CLA reach global markets (South Africa included) and the changes are numerous. Physically, the new CLA is 48 mm longer, 53 mm wider and its wheelbase has been extended by 30 mm. As a result, the CLA now stands 4 688 mm in length and 1 830 mm wide. This will address some criticisms that cabin space, especially in the rear, where things were a little cramped.

Cabin

The biggest changes occur in the cabin, where there's a big shift towards making the Mercedes-Benz CLA one of the more advanced and digitally connected vehicles in its segment. We have yet to drive the CLA and have therefore not felt or explored the cabin quality, but if its anything like the current iteration of Mercedes-Benz A-Class, the quality has improved in leaps and bounds. Both the previous generation A-Class and CLA suffered from rattles and squeaks at higher mileages, and some of the plastics used were not representative of what Mercedes-Benz stands for.

Engines

The previous generation of Mercedes-Benz CLA had a plethora of engines to choose from. Starting with the lowly CLA 200d (100 kW and 300 Nm), CLA 200 (115 kW and 250 Nm), CLA 220d (130 kW and 350 Nm) to the fiery CLA 250 Sport (155 kW and 350 Nm) and the mighty CLA 45 (280 kW and 475 Nm). The option of 4Matic all-wheel drive was thrown in for the CLA 250 and CLA 45 AMG.

We know so far that the new Mercedes-Benz CLA will come in many AMG flavours such as CLA 35, CLA 45 and CLA 45 S. Leaks have suggested that the flagship model will have over 300 kW. We also know there will be a CLA 250 with 165 kW and 350 Nm, as well as many other petrol and diesel options. Mercedes-Benz has also claimed that a manual gearbox will be offered.

Summary

The changes and difference between the old and new CLA are night and day, and we look forward to sampling the newcomer. The all-new Mercedes-Benz CLA will be built at the Kecskemét plant in Hungary and will go on sale in May 2019 and is expected to arrive in South Africa later in the year.

Production of new (SA-bound) Mercedes-Benz CLA kicks off

Mercedes-Benz says production of its second-generation CLA has officially kicked off at the Kecskemét plant in Hungary, which will exclusively produce the new model for the world market.

Revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January, the new CLA is scheduled to launch in South Africa in the third quarter of 2019. It is expected to slot in above the new A-Class Sedan.

“The ramp-up of the new CLA coupé once again demonstrates the effectiveness of our international production network for the compact models of Mercedes-Benz Cars,” said Markus Schäfer, member of the divisional board of management of Mercedes-Benz Cars in the production and supply chain division.

“The success story of the preceding model was already closely associated with the Kecskemét plant. We are now writing the next chapter in this story.”

Mercedes-Benz says “extensive preparatory measures” were made at the plant for the ramp-up in production of both the A-Class hatch and new CLA. The Kecskemét factory employs some 4 700 workers and produced more than 190 000 units in 2018.

Play Mario Kart In The New Mercedes-Benz CLA

Boys and their toys…

Most petrolheads and car fanatics will never turn down a quick racing game and, recently Mercedes tapped into this at the 2019 Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona, where they had a CLA on display at its stand to showcase the latest improvements of the brand’s MBUX.

OK it is not Mario Kart per say but rather SuperTuxKart which is an open-source version which can clearly be loaded onto the Merc infotainment system.

Interestingly, the manufacturer has involved a lot more than just the steering wheel and pedals in the experience. For example, the air vents blow air and the airflow depends on the speed of the car in the game. In addition, the interior’s LED ambient lighting switches from red to green at the start of the race. Finally, when the kart of the player crashes with a competitor, the seat belt tightens.

While this is just an exercise to show what the system is capable of, Mercedes plans to deliver gaming applications to its customers in the very near future.

New Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake arrives with 219bhp

Second generation CLA estate will go after younger buyers when it hits UK roads in September

Further exterior design flourishes include twin power domes within the bonnet, a sloping roofline and frameless doors.

Mirroring the changes made to the CLA saloon, the new shooting brake is 48mm longer than its predecessor at 4688mm. However, its width (with exterior mirrors clapped out) and height (on standard 16in wheels) are reduced by 33mm and 2mm respectively at 1999mm and 1442mm. The wheelbase has grown 30mm to 2729mm.

Mercedes-Benz says the CLA Shooting Brake has traditionally attracted some of its youngest customers. In a bid to see the new model appeal to similar buyers, the firm has focused on providing it with a contemporary interior that is largely shared with the A-Class. Interior space is improved, although the 30mm increase in wheelbase length has only led to a 1mm boost in rear seat leg room.

To help improve its load-carrying credentials, the capacity of the boot has increased by 10 litres to 505 litres, while its width and depth are also increased. The width of the boot aperture on the new CLA Shooting Brake has been increased by a considerable 236mm.

Forbidden fruit? Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake revealed

The new Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake has been revealed at the Geneva International Motor Show, offering more space than the swoopy, second-generation sedan version unveiled at the start of 2019. Of course, it seems highly unlikely this stretched model will be offered here in South Africa, considering its forebear didn’t make it to local shores (and considering the SA buying public’s general lack of love for wagons).

Measuring 4 688 mm from nose to rump, the new version is some 48 mm longer than its predecessor, as well as a full 53 mm wider. The CLA Shooting Brake’s boot capacity, meanwhile, comes in at a claimed 505 litres (up from the previous model’s 495 litres).

As with the four-door version, the new CLA Shooting Brake will be offered with a turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine (with this model badged “CLA250”) churning out 165 kW and 350 N.m, and driving the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The Stuttgart-based firm promises “a wide range of diesel and petrol engines” will later be offered, along with a manual gearbox for some variants and the option of all-wheel drive. An adaptive damping system will furthermore be optionally available, while alloy wheel sizes will range from 16 to 19 inches.

This new model develops on the CLA 4-door Coupe with the obvious addition of a bigger boot. The load space is claimed at a more than reasonable 505 litres.

The CLA models are angled towards the sporty buyer so it sits on a wider track and has a lower centre of gravity than the regular A-Class and A-Class Sedan. This imbues the CLA Shooting Brake with an agile driving experience according to Merc. There is adaptive damping and multiple driving modes to choose from but Merc remains adamant that the new car is comfortable and extremely quiet when required.

The interior is identical to the CLA and also features the latest MBUX infotainment system that responds to ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice commands.

As for the engine derivatives available for the Shooting Brake, Merc has chosen the unit from the CLA 250, which delivers 165 kW and 350 Nm of torque from the 2.0-litre turbopetrol. More engines will be available by the time the model launches in Europe during September this year and don’t count out an AMG 45 or 45 S model.

As for local availability, we are still waiting for confirmation but with this being an extremely niche model and South Africa's aversion to station wagons, it is unlikely this model will arrive in SA.
