Note that this release is only a few minutes of the radiation released at any coal fired plant, even with working flue scrubbers. the ash they dump each day would be, if it was made at a nuclear plant, be regarded as close to high level waste, and would be required to be stored for centuries in a special repository. Instead it is used to make cement blocks, cement and you are living in it.
You're conflating two different things/wrong. Coal ash is nowhere near the radioactivity of nuclear waste, what are the radionuclides, quantities, radiation doses, etc., it's not the same.

And yet coal plants kill a LOT more people per year, by a pretty big margin. It's one of the dirtiest forms of power generation that we currently use.

Sure, but that's a whataboutism argument, or red herring.
Coal should be shut down as it's quite polluting and expensive vs alternatives.
Nuclear should generally not be built anymore because it's the most expensive form of power, and part of the reason that a lot less people die, is because of all those safety systems and standards that are in place, and even then, accidents happen.
If a coal plant has an accident, an area needs a clean-up for a bit, if a nuclear site has one, goodbye to the area for decades/centuries.

Difference is that nuclear waste tends to be well managed, coal ash is messy, poorly handled, and spreads with the wind. Contains both uranium, mercury and a whole host of other toxic oxides in it, depending on the mine source. I would rather live next to a nuclear waste facility in say Japan than next to a coal ash dump, simply because the nuclear repository is much more likely to be properly run.

Except we live in Cape Town, next to what appears to be a poorly maintained nuclear facility where an extension lead and dodgy plug was apparently the cause of this contamination leak.
Makes one wonder that if they cant even maintain the basic stuff, how are they able to maintain the critical stuff.

Are they perhaps giving us the propaganda number?

I was always doing a check on extension cords and ladders used by contractors, and have told a few to go till they either fixed it or got new, as having an extension with 15 joints in it, all mixed cable types, from 2 core rip cord, to surfix, was not going to be plugged in. Same for ladders held together with wire, go get a new one, or borrow the ones i kept.

Remember the radiation leak they are complaining about is lower, dose wise, and total radiation released, than your average coal plant has when the bag house shakers do a clean cycle, and dust is sent up the flue to spread in the wind. might not be high there, but 2km downwind would definitely trigger a nuclear power plant monitors.

100% agree with you.

Just concerning when basic occupational health and safety isnt even in place at a nuclear power station, whilst the department of labour temporarily closed down one of our bicycle workshops because the mechanics didnt have steel toe boots.
