Serious allegations about unfair Eskom power bill discounts

A source in the South African electric vehicle (EV) charge point operator (CPO) industry has alleged that Eskom is unfairly exempting certain properties from demand charges if they install its EV chargers.

MyBroadband first reported on accusations regarding the utility's controversial entry into the CPO industry from a reputable source who preferred to remain anonymous in May 2026.

Reality check, ALL Eskom power bill discounts are effectively unfair, Eskom does not take a hit if they reduce any industries charges for power, they add the loss to their annual figures and recover the difference from the household user.

Capacity and fixed charges are the major reasons why business solar or industrial solar don't make half the difference people expect... or why solar can actually increase your electricity bill by charging from the grid after load-shedding (e.g. on a cloudy day).

The exemption makes sense. You cant penalise the property owner for excess demand due to the charging station as they are not getting any of the revenue. What's the issue here?
