TV licence avoidance costs the SABC R22.79 billion in six years

R23-billion TV licence blow in South Africa

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has lost out on R22.79 billion in TV licence revenue in its last six financial years, analysis by MyBroadband showed.

As TV licence avoidance has increased over the years, the SABC's annual lost revenue from this source increased from R3.29 billion at the end of 2019/20 to R4.18 billion at the end of 2024/25.
 
SABC TV's big problem with income is not licenses but advertisement income. They lost this income because of the shows they decided to air. The people wanting to advertise their products have no interest in the SABC as the people with the ability to purchase their products, does not watch SABC.

Case in point... I don't own a TV, I don't want that garbage in my house.
Instead of spending lots of money on a TV like some people do, I spent that money on PC monitors instead.

So what happened it's no longer advertising? Or wait it still is but both advertising and license revenue has decreased.
 
They have so many people that no longer have TVs but can't cancel, dead or emigrated people on their lists at this point that they can never be certain how many legitimate license payments they actually missed out on.

I'm still getting TV license payment demands every now and then for the dead woman that clearly had my number before me. Up to R10k now.

They're still looking for Mrs Mantashi on my LTE sim card in my Huawei B315... She owes them R37k.

Lots of them... I've tried to cancel 2 different TV licenses, for completely legitimate reasons. Still getting the demands and just ignoring them.

and until they sort this garbage out none of their numbers can be trusted.

Cancelling your TV licence should be one of the simplest interactions with any government entity. Thanks to their particular brand of ineptitude it's basically impossible.

100%, and I won't even bother ever again basically, they can send their demands they will go straight into File 13.
I spend zero time, they waste money and the outcome is ultimately the same for me.

The hilarious thing is, if it were a simple matter to cancel the TV licence, more people might actually bother to get one. SABC might end up with more revenue when you add up all the resources wasted trying to chase down the supposed debts of dead tannies and people with no TV that can't cancel.

I don't have one mainly because, in order of importance:
  1. I don't want to support the SABC on principle
  2. It's simple to just use a family member's licence
  3. If my situation ever changes and I want to cancel, it's basically impossible

This, not a fan of DSTV but they make it really easy to re-sub for a few months (to watch Sport in June/July for instance) and then cancel again. DSTV know that making things impossible to cancel annoys the sh*t out of people and alienates them from ever wanting to actually use your services. SABC should take notes.
