Been a while since I've been in this thread, but I'm poking my head back in.

Just signed an order for an inverter and batteries for my house here.

Not so much for backup purposes, but because I have a time-of-use tariff. So I can charge the battery up on cheap leccy, and then run off it for most of the time that the tariff is high.

The system's expandable, so I can double (or triple) the battery capacity (ordered 13.5kwh) pretty easily - and it has 3 MPPTs built in as well so when the cashflow suits, I can throw up a couple of panels. My energy provider will pay me a decent amount for grid export, so anything coming out of the panels will be pure cashes... In fact they'd pay more for export during peak time than I'd pay for import during cheap time, so if I have any spare power left in the batteries towards the end of peak hours, I can export that at a profit too.

How much are the line fees?

How many kWh in a month do you need to export to break even with line fees?

If you do break even do they pay you cash or just funny money credit?

What is the cheap battery charge unit cost and what is the peak unit cost, ie, how many units for ROI of 13kWh battery?

I assume you mean standing charge (daily fixed cost)... They're not really relevant to this as you'd pay them anyway regardless of having an ESS system or not.
That being said, I think it's about 47p a day. Export is about 12p/kwh, so 4 kwh per day of export would offset the standing charge.
They maintain an account for you - so if you're in credit you build up a credit balance (which you can ask them to pay you out at any time). The other thing to consider is that my gas is on the same account, so any credit on electricity would offset against gas charges, so that's a win.
Cheap time is about 6 or 7p/kwh
Expensive time is about 32p/kwh

So on 13kwh shifted from expensive to cheap, I'd save about £3.25 per day or £98 a month - which is incidentally exactly what the financed cost of the battery is. So it's revenue neutral from day 1 without any panels.

So JHB is about 5 times more expensive than the UK.

Actually, looking at the numbers, I've asked the supplier if they can amend my order to 27kwh of batteries, as doubling the batteries only adds about 50% to the cost.

And these have arrived.

It's incredible how the tech has moved on... I remember my 10kwh of BYD batteries being a waist high stack of rack mounted units

We're getting 140v in at the moment so I'm running the generator every 3-4 hours for an hour for the fridges. :(
 
Any reason you went through the trouble of getting a Tesla battery?
What trouble?

It's got all the right integrations and stuff to work with my energy provider to sell excess power at peak time. Plug and play and all that
