Generator or Inverter for residential use?

Where are you based? In SA? I was wondering why you bought an Expensive battery when any decent LFP brand can do the job. So there must be something about the Tesla that you liked above all else to be willing to pay probably 4x more

Not in SA.

I have a Tesla car as well so I trust their battery tech's longevity. I also expect there will soon be vehicle to grid integration through the powerwall.
 
Yeah I didn't pay that much.

Eg, the gateway was £500

13.5kwh battery was about 4500
The pw3 was in the region of 6k.

Including installation, commissioning and all the legal bits about approval for embedded generation and energy export
 
In the UAE batteries are priced just a little bit cheaper than SA if not the same price. They sell some huge batteries also.

Oh the other thing is the Tesla stuff is all IP67 - can be installed outside. I don't have a garage :ROFL:

It's so compact as well.
1.1m tall, 61cm wide and about 36cm deep for 27kwh, 11kva and 20kw worth of mppts.

hahaha yeah they were quite happy to install it in my driveway in full view of the road. In fact, that's where the gateway is. But the inverter and batteries are behind a fence

My FIL and SIL both have their inverter and batteries outside, in weather proof steel boxes though and not visible unless you are on their property and know where to look.

What do they do about heat? Coz those things are enough to heat up a room in winter,

It is crazy when you mentioned that it is revenue neutral from day 1.
It just shows the difference. Here we have space, their you have other benefits.
Not trying to derail but have heard mentions of TOU tariffs this side.

Apparently the municipalities are paying TOU to Eskom and selling flat rates. They want to change that.
More batteries will make a huge difference then.

They all are in metal boxes already? So as long as the vents are open there’s no issue.

I would just buy the waterproof ones to start with though.

Yes metal boxes the manufacturer has already tested to. Adding another on top DIY i don't see how you don't introduce heat issues. And yeah I agree, best to just get the outdoor ones to begin with. Like below:
