Instantaneous Water Heaters

if you want instant water heat in any kind of volume you need gas.
A guy I worked with claimed him and his family bathed with a 3kW instant heater and brought his electric bill down to 1k. Don’t ask me how comfortable the showers where.
 
They burst, use lots of power etc. I can see why he wants an instant heater. Would probably use like a 10th of normal geyser.

The logistics of getting it to work would be worth it I think.
They don't just burst if you replace anode and even if it does, the tray diverts water outside. Anyway, it probably cheaper to get a heat pump and insulate the pipes if its a long run to the bathroom or even cheaper than heat pump, get one of your mppt controllers and solar panels setup and take geyser offgrid.

Still dont know the reasoning behind this project.

So was he supplying legionella water to the 3kW heater?

I mean 25k for HP vs 5k for instant heater? Plus another 5k for wiring? If on 80A supply I would attempt it. Would still have 6.5kW to play with. No gas costs.

How much did you pay for your solar controller and panels again?

and that system doesnt care if incoming water is 1c or 20c. 12kW heater will battle in winter with super cold water. Still would like to know the reasons for this. I understand putting a little one under the kitchen sink as that will save water and electricity waiting for the tap to get hot when doing the dishes and it doesnt take a lot of power so no huge power mods needed.

Something of interest is that in Dubai the geysers are smaller, at least for apartments. They put a geyser in each bathroom and avoid the single large geysers. Sizes are between 50 and 80 litres. Every apartment has a switch that looks like a light switch that allows you to turn it on or off. Wonder if smaller geysers are more efficient than larger geysers.

I doubt it, it’s probably easier from a plumbing point of view who knows.

AI says it is more efficient to have smaller geyser than larger from a standby losses view. Regulations here also supposedly say you must size the geyser for the occupancy. Seems the occupancy is per number of people the bathroom services.

What happens if you forget to turn it on and you're in a rush? Also, what happens if you forget to turn it off? The gulag?
Nah you just pay more. I think they put it there to make people comfortable with turning the geyser on and off. Only electrician should be meddling in the DB from all the signs and stickers I saw on it. Another regulation I suspect SA doesn’t have. If EL trips, call electrician. Don’t try to fix yourself.

Sounds like Australia. Cant even change a light bulb.
 
There a lot of regs with gas. We couldnt install one even if we wanted to because it cant be near drain, window, door or aircon (electrical source incase of spark).

Cars on the road are volatile (fuel, spark, gas) and capable of catching fire, of exploding. They break, crash at high speed, and many lives as lost annually. We yield operation of these dangerous machines without full supervision. Vehicles as not safe, we accept the risk. 5 Star NCAP and you still will have deaths.

Yet we (the authorities and controlling bodies) freak out about being perfect regarding gas and electricity and we get over regulated.
