Solar power and Geyser

AFAIK, the aux port (non-essential loads) doesn't function during power failure.

Okay, keep paying eskom for hot water then.
So why would you guys be telling him to put geyser on inverter. You would be introducing him to lots of micro managing and work on a system that has been working just fine.

I'm telling him to put it on the essential side and have nothing on non-essential.
 
and how hot is the hot water in the morning if you turn your geyser breaker off at 5pm?
Water is ice cold, it switches of at 3pm.geyser is outside even though I have a blanket and built a mild steel box around it, it water does not stay hot.

How many litres do you use between 3pm and ice cold water in the morning?

All the more reason to not do it. Just pay Eskom and save for Heatpump. Or do what I did. Now he’ll be tinkering and clouds this and that. When he evidently doesn’t want to do that.
 
45% of 12kWh (80% of 15kWh) is 5.4kWh.

So you would use 11.6 - 5.4 = 6.2kWh from the grid

@zakslaher, post a screenshot of sunsynk app that shows daily loads and solar and battery, lets see what your peak loads are.
 
I reckon Aux port. Set a different SOC. so what if grid goes dead and it goes dead? His geyser would be dead regardless. Hopefully that aux port gets its power from the grid when the SOC level is hit but rest of house is still supplied by battery.

I can see that working fine with zero tinkering and draining of batteries as can use excess PV during the day.

Anything other than Aux port that works in such a fashion is a big NO from me.

What is the hot water needed in the morning for? Cant they use the day to heat the ice cold water up again for free from the sun and if there is no sun then it will use grid if its below a certain soc. This is all on essential load. Dont think you can set soc settings for aux.

Anyway, I've said my bit. 3kW element which leaves you 5kW for other devices. 6kWp solar makes about 30kWh a day, so 12kWh into the geyser and 15kWh into the battery = 27kWh, so not much solar wasted.

Yeah its a case of different people, different usage. The 150 litre at the house was more than enough for my wife and I. Covered the bath in the evening and 2 showers in the morning.

Your geyser also started at 70c with the last rays of sunlight.
 
Thank you, Can you perhaps advise on an installer. Also does it not finish your batteries. I want to run my geyser in the morning at 04:00 - 06:00
in the day water is heated as high as possible - so by morning its still warm - if it needs to heat up in the morning i only let it go to 40/ 45c

sometimes i have to use grid if battery SOC is too low but we try to shift when we shower to user it more effectively
 
But doesn’t the aux port have separate settings and allow you to set at different SOC? If it doesn’t follow that I would not put the geyser on inverter at all.

No Aux is different from non essential - you got some fuzzy logic with it - you can set it to use battery if no grid but only if batteries are over a certain percentage - you can even set it if there is grid to only come if certain scenarios are met

Why would that matter?

The first thing you turn off under power failure is the geyser…so that’s a good thing if the AUX does it automatically for you.

Why not?

There is AC passthrough for a reason.

I happily do in excess of 12kW regularly on my 8kW.
