Afrihost customers hit by Internet outage

Numerous Afrihost fibre broadband subscribers reported problems with their home Internet connections on the evening of Tuesday, 28 July 2026.

Afrihost informed customers shortly after 20:00 on Tuesday that it was facing a major outage in Johannesburg.

Where did all the Afrihost hate come from recently?

When I got fibre 4 years ago they were were widely regarded as one of the best, especially with their support on the forum.
Some people are still hurt from the adsl days I guess. I choose them purely for their mybb reps presence and never have any issues.

There was a fire that took out some infrastructure in the Boskruin Area on Tuesday around 3PM. Our street and complex were down but it was not Afrihost, it was the Fiber that got burnt I believe. Service was restored by yesterday evening for us. Teams had to splice a lot of cables apparently. Our complex has people in a wide variety of providers including Afrihost and all were down.

Internet has been iffy for a while, since the reported national outage a few weeks ago anyway. been monitoring my connection since then and still get international connection loss on a regular basis. Luckily it is only for a few seconds at a time now so most people will not even notice.

Recently? where have you been? plenty of threads on the topic since 2014

in my case:

- many years ago they had major network issues and outright lied to all their customers, including me, until the CEO eventually had to apologise in a press release

- fast forward to about 2 years ago and I made the mistake of signing up with them again, they took my money, never delivered what I signed up for, after weeks of support hell they finally admitted what I signed up for can't be done (switching from normal DSL to naked DSL)

never again, they're in the same bottom scum feeding bucket as Webafrica, been on fiber with Atomic ever since, it is comical how much better customer support can be

I have the same thing. Subpar connection for weeks going on months at this point. I wonder if cool ideas has the same issues? They appear to also be active on the forum; I'd gladly switch of they can actually deliver what I'm paying for

Been with Cool Ideas for a couple of years, and in general I am extremely happy with them, any issues I have had were quickly attended to. With the current intermittent international connection, they were not as open, and blamed my router, but they did send me a new router for free and as I have said the connection is much better and isn't dropping like it was, but it's still there and I am still seeing it on the Cloudflare DNS resolver when I run continuous ping tests. The upside is I am no longer being disconnected when the connection drops.

I have been having this exact issue for almost 2 months and they have not been able to do anything. their troubleshooting is way below what you would expect. I cloned a old mac address from a dead router and that's how I got my connectivity working.
rest assured, my cancellation is in after 10 years with them. Sayonara Afrihost.

Obviously there's exceptions but it seems generally that the smaller the company the better the service. Call vodacom and there's an almost zero percent chance that person can help. You're passed around & stuck with agents who seem to have no permission to use initiative and action things.

Hopefully AH aren't heading in this direction, but maybe some things are inevitable. Really wish these companies would think long & hard about how to structure customer service while they're expanding - this is where thought & initiative must go, not into stupid marketing and fluff. You want to be a standout business? Then make a conscious effort not to let your support become this partitioned, script driven hell that bears no resemblance to the ambition and service when your company started.

I say this often, but in my experience xneelo is a great example of a company that does customer service right. Every time I've called with a technical issue the person answering the phone is able to assist all the way through. Call with an issue, end call with resolution.

In this day and age, how in all that is holy, do you lose power, to data center infrastructure?
Sooo there I was, 7PM in the Vodacom hosting facility in Midrand.

Company I worked for was hella cheap and also maybe why they failed.

Anyway had 1 of those cheap 2 plug to 3 plug converters for an external to pull a 600GB compressed SQL backup.

POS did not want to plug in. Kept moering the thing until it got in half way.

Blue sparks and then our rack and the next went down.

2 retail companies head offices went down for less than an hour that evening.

*Head Office means central point of data where data gets updated and forwarded. So the main server database.
