South Africa is working on a plan to introduce digital driver's licences, which could eliminate the need to renew physical cards altogether.

If it's digital it's accessible online. Cops can just look it up.

Which they already can, it's on e-natis, Insurance uses this to check if you have a valid license.

They have no requirement to though, because there's still laws around physical cards. Do away with physical cards and those laws fall away. You can no longer be stopped and fined for not carrying your license, because there's nothing to carry.

I know, that is the funny thing, they will fine you a massive amount and demerit you for not carrying a silly little card, that they could just check on by using your ID number on their phone already.

but, like it or not, it's the widely accepted interpretation of the law that not carrying that card is against the law.

Eliminating the card eliminates that stupid interpretation.
