Prison officials must leave cellphones at reception before entering the facility to do their jobs

Minister Pieter Groenewald banned prison officials from carrying cellphones on the job

Correctional services minister Pieter Groenewald said prison officials must now leave their mobile phones at reception before they are permitted to enter the facility to do their jobs.

This is to prevent the smuggling of cellphones to inmates, which had become commonplace and allowed criminals to perpetrate fraud and scams even while behind bars.

Much better (albeit more expensive) solution would be a cell jammer in the prisons.. then they can smuggle phones to their hearts delight and they'll be fscking useless.

Considering someone I'm aware of was in prison for a week ( admittedly not full incarceration but pending bail, it's a separate section apparently ), they were able to gain access to a cellphone and make calls while incarcerated, NOT through the prison system.

So yeah, security sucks, this was last week.

Yup, have had the same thing with someone I knew who ended up in the Remand section for 2 weeks or so. Have also heard stories of people getting calls from the other prisoners demanding airtime or else kind of thing.

One has to wonder if some beam forming on the part of the cell operators might help reduce the signal availability in the prison (for those that aren't in massively built up areas)

If you go and read the committee meeting, you can see more of the problem. Like criminals threatening the families of correctional services.

They need an El-Salvador solution. Have a separate prison in the middle of the desert for any criminal with a conviction with gang activities. As it is in the middle of the desert, there isn't any cellphone reception.

And they also need the budget, which I might add is more important than any sort of gibsmedat like the social relief of distress grant they want to implement.
