It now costs R1,474 for a South African family to watch an IMAX movie and buy popcorn and Coke

Took my wife to watch The Odyssey in the USA. IMAX Total: Tickets $30, Popcorn and drinks $30. $60 = ZAR 1074. That's for 2 people though so way more expensive which is surprising.
 
Pfffft, only cost me R80 each to watch The Odyssey and new SpiderMan at NuMetro Scene Extreme (similar to this new smaller IMAX) due to having a Nedbank card, but there are many other options to get discounts.

One does not HAVE to buy popcorn and snacks and such, that is a very optional extra, impulse control saves money, as always.

It’s not just simply “impulse control”

“Going to the cinema” is more than just watching a movie, it’s meant to be an experience. A freshly made large popcorn to share with your date, fountain soda (or a slush puppie) etc is all part of that experience. If it’s not a full blown experience, one may as well stay home, since we almost all have big TVs these days, decent sound, and access to thousands of movies on demand.

It has become insanely overpriced though, and at Ster Kinekor the popcorn isn’t even freshly made on site anymore - it’s now day old stale popcorn. The whole experience has become lousy, and it doesn’t help how bad most new movies are.

I’m so glad I discovered Roadhouse Cinema recently. The tickets are well priced, they show a lot of old movies (and new ones), the popcorn is fresh, and the coldrinks don’t require a bank loan.

You dont have to buy those extras. Totally self inflicted.

Or, you can look at it a different way - going to the movies and not buying the extras is like going to the Kruger park, but then staying in your chalet all day, because doing a game drive is a waste of petrol.

Or to use your anology more directly - spending the money on flights for your holiday (regardless of what class), but then not visiting any of the attractions, because you can save money by sitting in the hotel all day.
 
And then you still get to enjoy your seat being constantly kicked by the tool behind you. Or the couple who won't stop talking. Or the knob in front of you constantly on his phone that for some reason, has been set to the brightest possible level, blinding you.

No thanks.

Just like my gym membership being replaced by getting a full home gym setup.
Paying the upfront expense to have a good home set up and waiting for these films to come to streaming platforms just ends up being a much better experience.

Every theatre experience had something that was an annoyance. Haven't stepped foot into a theatre since 2015.
 
Is nobody going to mention that kids watch for free with Discovery Vitality, and the parents get a 50% discount and additional benefits like free popcorn and even free movie tickets with some promotions (buying them with Discovery Miles)?

My family doesn't go often to the movies, but for our family of three we generally come away with well less than R500 ... which is fine. Top tip is buying chocolate outside the cinema and carrying it in, if you're a chocolate addict like me lol.

This is the way.

If you want to be really sneaky, buy a large popcorn half an hour before the movie starts, then go buy KFC or McDonald's or other snacks, etc, pour out the popcorn, fill the popcorn box with your chosen snacks, cover your goods with the popcorn you removed, walk into the cinema with your trojan popcorn right under their noses.

Guy makes the point of what it was back in the day. Getting dropped off with a R5 for you and your sis, to going to The Wheel with R50 for a movie date and going home with change are long gone in SA
