You are wrong. A guy on YouTube with 300k subs said an iPhone 7 still works perfectly fine.
A guy on YouTube... yeah right... in other words a fukking attention-seeking influencer that doesn't know a USB-C from a phone wall jack, that was raised by AOL.

I kept the phone running because it still had the Capitec bank account on it that belonged to my small side hustle. That's all. Otherwise it's pretty useless to me.

So no tires, no brake pads, no checking of batteries, coolant, etc.
(pointless telling people the EV I have experience with, had a radiator and coolant for quite obvious reasons, and a gearbox with as far as I could see, a drain plug)
 
The anti EV crowd is very woke. You know that you can drive your old diesel clankers till you die. No one forcing you a buy an EV. Just drive around, replacing your engine oil every 10000km and leaving a fine layer of soot everywhere.

Don't forget, EVs also need things like oil changes. The transmission definitely does like any other.
Some have told me that depending on (ab)use, the IGBTs in the inverter might degrade as well by then. Electronics and heat are universally known to lead to premature failure of the former.
Two things , how often do you change transmission oil and when you say "some have told you" sounds a bit like hearsay besides abuse a petrol engine and it also gives problems.
 
The funniest thing is all these people telling us the battery will last 10 years or longer.

We heard these same stories years ago with Hubble and after that many other batteries. As soon as they start failing your warrantee suddenly means nothing.
So does that make you anti solar (anti green energy) because of Hubble batteries.
Batteries life span is measured in cycle's , in other words the number of full charges which is around 6000 not year's.
 
These articles also always seem to ignore the cost of buying a new EV.

I’m a hardcore environmentalist, so I drive 20 year old cars to save the planet you see. So even at 12l/100km my old diesel is still cheaper than any EV on the planet

Battery is going to last longer than that. Besides with the speed at which battery prices are dropping you will probably be able to replace the battery in 10 years time for less than you spent on oil, air filters, spark plugs, cam belts etc over 10 years on petrol car.
I dont think a chinesium battery built for a cheap car is going to last. Average cost to service a IC car is about R2500 if you do it once a year. Doubt the battery will cost R25k ever. BMW I3 Battery pack is over 400k.

You can’t be serious man? If you are only considering tailpipe emissions, you aren’t being serious.

My 20 year old car is super environmentally friendly. You need to look at the entire product lifecycle.
 
While electric vehicles (EVs) offer several advantages, I do not believe they are the ideal solution for everyone at this stage.

The initial purchase price of an EV remains significantly higher than that of a comparable internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle, making the upfront investment difficult to justify for many buyers.

There are also environmental considerations associated with battery production. Manufacturing a typical EV battery requires the extraction and processing of large quantities of raw materials. It is often cited that producing a battery weighing around 450 kg can require moving 400 tons of rock to obtain the necessary minerals for one battery. Although battery recycling technology is improving, large-scale, cost-effective recycling and end-of-life disposal remain ongoing challenges.

Depreciation is another concern. Many EVs lose value rapidly as battery technology advances, offering longer ranges and faster charging with each new generation. As a result, older models can become less desirable in the used vehicle market, similar to how computer technology becomes outdated over time. Buyers are also cautious about battery longevity and the potential cost of replacement once the warranty expires.

Battery replacement costs can be substantial. For example, replacing the battery in certain premium EVs, such as the BMW i3, has been reported to cost 400k. When combined with normal depreciation of 50% or more, this can make long-term ownership expensive. By comparison, just a battery replacement on a i3 with the equivalent amount could cover 60 + years of maintenance on a conventional ICE vehicle.

Safety is another consideration. Although EV fires are relatively uncommon, lithium-ion battery fires can be extremely difficult to extinguish and require specialised firefighting techniques. While the overall fire risk is still being debated, the consequences of a battery fire can be more severe than those of a conventional vehicle fire.

The additional weight of EV battery packs also places greater demands on tyres and suspension components, which may lead to increased wear and potentially higher maintenance costs over time.

Finally, while charging infrastructure continues to improve, EVs are still less practical for frequent long-distance travel or heavy towing. Towing significantly reduces driving range, and long journeys often require careful route planning around available charging stations.

Electric vehicles undoubtedly have a place in the future of transportation, particularly for urban commuting. However, based on current purchase costs, depreciation, battery replacement expenses, infrastructure limitations, and practical considerations, I believe they are not yet the best choice for every driver.

Not at all. I am giving an example why all these people saying the EV's batteries will last that long or even longer. We have heard all this before, even with gel batteries. Big promises, claims and excitement, but the proof is in the pudding. And that we will only see what the real facts is after a decade or two. Buying an EV is a risk at this stage and chances are that you will loose way more money on it in the long run than on a ICE car.
