What is driving the current “anti alcohol” rhetoric online

Not really, it puts a huge burden on our health system, and having a family member with diabetes is no fun.
Diabetes isn't caused by sugar so not putting a huge burden on our healthcare system.
Type 1 Diabetes
Not linked to diet
Caused by an immune system error
The body attacks its own insulin-making cells
Type 2 Diabetes
Not caused by sugar alone
Linked to genes and body weight
Extra calories from too much sugar can cause weight gain
Extra body fat raises your risk for the disease
Sugary drinks can strain how your body handles insulin over time.

It's can be a factor but you can develop diabetes without eating sugar at all.

Well, some used to take Mandrax with their dope and that made a few of them mad things. And then there's some weird acid trips apparently. But in large part, alcohol is known for this. Too many abusive fathers etc.

(Also Tic changed people into nutters if I remember correctly, but I'm not the one to have these details.)
Sure and some used to take cocaine with their alcohol?? Mixing things doesn't make the original the cause of the issue.
People do stupid things all the time, but it's far more likely to happen with alcohol as that is one of the fastest legal ways to supress impulse control.

Any emotional crutch will.
Problem is, people hear the word blood sugar and associate it with dietary sugar. They are not the same thing.
Carbs get processed in the body to sugars as well, fruit as well (slower release though). My cousin was 6 when he developed Diabetes. Sadly passed on at 27 from it.

Still, discouraging excess sugar use is a good thing. At my age I certainly feel it when I binge on some sugary snacks, the worst makes me light headed.

Discouraging excess anything is a good thing :p. You'll feel the same way if you over ate anything. That's your body telling you to stop :p.

Nah, this is a really bad dizzy light-headedness, developed in the last few months. Seems to mostly be triggered by sweets that are grouped as having too much corn syrup, which drops my vitamin D levels apparently (there's a self taught expit living here).

Good news is that even small amounts of alcohol now feel dangerous as well, so I just don't, stopped that years ago already. Not that I liked drinking anymore much anyway, not my cup of tea anymore ;)

Maybe it's astroturfing.
What?

I went to China on a business trip in 2023, you know the country where every shop sells booze and a 9yo can buy some if he or she likes?

I got pissed one night on Japanese Whiskey surrounded by people I did not know from a bar of soap and who did not speak a word of English. They insisted on paying for everything, a magical moment of alcohol induced friendship, a blurring of borders and cultures and differences and senses.

The next day I went to a juice bar/internet cafe style thing and while there one of our suppliers explained to me that alcohol is an older generation thing in China, most of the kids drink fruit juices and tea while playing games, alcoholism is a dying trend in china.

It all got me thinking and I have not touched booze since.

Having seen the booze culture in different environments, it made me realise just how cancerous it has become in South Africa.

It is still rather strange for me to go out socialising, I tend to leave early and not because of my age just because the conversations around me turn into an endless loop of over excitement and repetition as the general blood alcohol content around me rises.

I have more intelligent conversations playing roblox with my 10 year old son and his entourage than I do with my peers after the 4'th or 5'th bottle cap hits the floor.

Very well put, sir.

High Fructose corn syrup is another kettle of fish. Basically fructose takes longer for the body to process into glucose. As it needs to go to the liver to be broken down into glucose.
So yes blood sugar doesn't get the glucose spike initially, but the liver is taking the knock like alcohol does.
In doing so it actually doesn't signal the body as quickly as normal sugar or glucose would do that it's had enough. So this sugar addiction thing could actually be high fructose corn syrup related. Plus it's super sweet and fatty which the brain dopamine loves.
Not normal sugar which does contain fructose as well but also glucose.

I find it amusing at first, but yeah can get bored at events cause of me drinking diet soda, water or coffee.
Plus the sheer amount of alcohol some put away, it's like no one would down a six pack of soda, but 12 beers? Or 9 brandies and coke??
Plus the food takes forever :(

Makes sense, my liver has been sensitive for ages. I take a Milk Thistle supplement which works well now (Dischem Gold seems the best).

Anyway.... alcohol is quite certainly the trigger that got me here (but it's myself that is responsible).
I'll leave it there

Yea if you stay long enough you get to hear the same story from the same person at least 3 times, each time with a little bit more inebriation flare and a lot less vocabulary.
