Official Manchester United Supporters' Thread Part 5

I'm a bit conflicted on this one - a few years ago then definitely - not sure about him now. He is good player and we got him at a decent amount - just his age is a concern - i dunno - hoping to be impressed

Some players have diesel engines; some don't. Different sport, but look at Pieter-Steph Du Toit. 33. Plays a very hard game, but Rassie doesn't seem to need to rest him as much as the other old boys.

I'm sure United did their homework.

I'm cautiously optimistic :-)

same old mistakes in the transfer market as always - United need a striker or two - proper number nines - not just forwards - we only have Sesko and he is not match fit - and when that happens we don't have consistent goalscorers - we just have supplementary goalscorers ie the guys who add a few goals to the number nine who needs to score 20 goals per season in the league alone - and United have not had that since Romelu Lukaku was allowed to leave ...... Jason Wilcox is a moron - he is letting United survive with one striker - Sir Alex used to make do with four per season (out and out number 9s and separate number 10's ie supplementary forwards - now we have loads of attackers who can operate as number 10's but only one recognised number 9)

these Ineos tw@ttys need to realize that a team is not just the sum of the main first team players - a successful team needs a squad where every position has competition for spots as well as cover for injuries and Uniteds upper management are just too stupid to understand this - their utter donkeys balls of not buying players in the January windows is always going to bite them on their ar5e and relying on total morons like Jason Wilcox to oversee the player purchases is a total cant move because he is a brainless fark who cant recognise a good player even if one slaps him in the face - that is why United are still years away from building a competitive team because they keep relying on utter ar5es

same old indifferent start to the season and the same old results are going to happen - no title challenge from United this season nor the next unless they sort out that cant Wilcox's brains

I’m not going to panic YET - but similar trends from last year are still there and worrying. Can’t breakdown a low block and struggling to beat one v one. Players still getting back to match fitness and gelling so will give it time

I think that's a bit of an exaggeration, and time will tell whether we can put together a decent campaign. But honestly, I did start getting those familiar 'not again' vibes immediately. But that's probably paranoia from the past 13 years of almost constant disappointment.

That said, I think last year's summer window was decent. But this time, some of the decisions seem silly so far. Why pile in THREE central midfielders when there was an obvious need for a left-back, which we're leaving late? I recall us signing Diego Leon (a Paraguayan left back) not so long ago, but apparently he's not ready. Whether he ever will be, I don't know. We lost Carreras that way - which was an idiotic episode, so one wonders why we invest in young foreign talent if we don't give them a chance.

Dorgu became a winger, so he's lost as a left-back.

Amass deserves a chance too, but that doesn't look like it'll happen, so we'll sell him for peanuts and then we'll splash on someone who is a risk.

Balde, the Barcelona lad whose injury record isn't great in recent years, is the big prospect right now. But it'd be smarter to get him
on a loan with an option to buy. I doubt whether the board will do that, though. Which is silly, because everyone else tries our players before they buy...and then they don't cough up even discounted prices (Sancho & Rashford).

Our central defence also needs solid players who can stay fit and perform, because I don't think any of our current centre backs have held out an entire season without long absences.

We'll definitely need top quality at right-back to replace Dalot, but Mazraoui is fine for now.

I'm with you on the striker / forwards thing, but also remember that when Fergie had 4 strikers, the norm was to play two at a time. These days, it's only one, and the others are all 'forwards' (which we have plenty of).

That said, pure number 9s are rare these days. Still, I would have settled for an older one to back up Sesko. Zirkzee isn't that kind of player, and Rashford - despite his new squad number - isn't either. Maybe it's wishful thinking that if they gave him the 9, he'd score like he did that one season when he was outstanding (before it all fell apart again).

In the old days under Fergie, the saying was strikers hunt in pairs. And he always had two pairs. Us just having one is a problem. But, as we can't seem to be able to put in decent crosses to feed any big striker, it seems a moot point at the moment.

about the striker thing - we don't even have anyone who can replace Sesko when he is injured - Zirkzee is not a striker and he can't even buy a goal right now - Rashford is a winger (self confessed and he doesn't want a striker role when he isn't sulking and tries to play while on the pitch ..... hint - last time he was in a United shirt he scored only 4 league goals so yes the tw@t was sulking after his wage was increased from £200000 to £350000) Cunha and Mbuemo are not strikers and while Mount and Bruno are primarily central attacking midfielders capable of playing a number 10 role if needed they are nowhere near strikers either - so where the two players that are capable of producing 20+ goals per season that every title chasing side needs - because without those goalscorers the closest any team will come to a title is congratulating the other guys who won it

United need someone with a brain doing player purchases ..... not a brain dead ar5e like Jason Wilcox who goes into a dressing room at half time while the actual manager (at that time Amorim before he was sacked) is doing his half time team talk to arrogantly tell the players like a total Po35 that HE is the actual manager when all he is, is just another brain dead donkeys balls cant

Forget about a striker how we didn't sign a new left back this window is mind blowing and we could have done with another center back, we cannot possibly rely on Shaw if we want to realistically contend for anything this season.

i did not mention the left back because i thought that they were working on it and that one would arrive before the transfer window closed BUT i should have remembered that the man in charge is Jason "farking" Wilcox the brainless tw@t

United have regressed back to making a mess of the transfer windows - i don't expect that to change anytime soon and there won't be any January transfers either thanks to those makri chootiyas the Glazer broers and rattytwatty and that Donkey Jason "I am the manager" farking Wilcox (maha chodu himself)

I don't thin they have made a mess of the last two transfer windows - you can't really say any of the signings were poor. Quite the opposite.

But they have fallen short in making it a complete transfer window, with the glaring hole at LB.

Last season they had a successful summer transfer window but in the 10 years prior to that they spent more than a Billion pounds running around chasing their tails with zero idea buying tw@ts Like Sancho and Antony and Onana etc

this season the failure is not necessarily in who they bought but in who they omitted to buy

still zero idea in the transfer market - even though Luke Shaw played okay against Everton IMHO United need the new Left Back in the January Window because it wont be long till Shaw is injured again and can't play for the rest of the season - and then in the Summer they need to sign just three players to get the team mostly balanced ie spend £200 million to £250 million quid on a proper world class striker/centre forward (proper goal scoring number 9 not a twat like Trashford who is still bleating on about only playing left winger) ie somebody better than Sesko and keep Sesko as the backup and competition for places and two decent proven centre backs because we wont win much with Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez and Lenny Yoro being our centre backs

Also at the moment United have an infuriating habit of standing off the opposition toward the end of games and allowing the entire opposition team to come onto them as if to say "break us down if you can" ...... and with the players we have right now that isn't difficult for the opposition to do and they generally manage to do it with ease - the only way for United to actually now undisputedly to win the game is to be more than 2 goals ahead in the last 5 minutes - otherwise you know for a fact that its going to inevitably end in a draw or in extreme cases where they add time for goals scored ......an actual loss for United

Fergie carried 4 out-and-out strikers for a long time because he was a 4-4-2 stalwart. Even in his final seasons, he'd still throw out a 4-4-2 when at home or clear favourite when everybody else was moving to a 4-2-3-1.

Very few teams today have more than 2 all out centre forwards because the systems currently in vogue call for an extra midfielder and place more emphasis on wide players, utility forwards who can play across the front 3 or as an attacking mid (Mbuemo and Cunha) and false 9s. Basically Pep Guardiola killed the #9. His system, implemented to great success across 3 of the 5 major European leagues, called for possession-based football where the #9 was practically rendered obsolete, and everybody started copying him. More bodies in the middle with the attacking impetus coming from wide. Pep signing Haaland was a noticeable shift in how he played football, because for a long time he made do without a proper #9.

EDIT: Even if you look at Harry Kane, who is a ''proper'' #9, he frequently drops deep to get involved in build-up play. The classic big man up top is a rare species at the elite level of football and no team is going to be carrying 2 or more quality 9s when most don't even have one good one.

So you are saying that its okay if we have only one ie Sesko and we dont have cover for him when he is injured ........ that is utterly stupid - in fact he is only playing a few minutes of each game now and is only having a minimal impact because he is still coming back from a long term injury and isn't fit enough to even play a full 90 minutes for even one game per week and you want to rely on him alone for the Premier League, the Carabao Cup, The FA cup and also the Champions league ...... one more time i will state - do not be insanely certifiably looney tunes - Zirkzee is capable of nothing - we have no other 20 goal per season striker (any title winning side needs two of those and whatever the formation Sir Alex's sides always had those) as well as the actual defenders capable of telling any team that if they want to beat us they can come at us - we don't have players of that level now - we don't have capable cover for players to make our squad any good because the ar5es buying the players don't actually care if we win or lose - just that we make money from the gate takings and selling merchandise

also if i'm reading correctly you are saying we don't need more than 2 - who is the second one? We would have been okay if we did not sell Hojlund and allowed Carrick to give him a crack at improving on the job - as it stands we sold Hojlund and we have Zirkzee who is more what you call the false 9 - and Sesko right now is merely currently an example of what happens when you try to carry an injured player or even one trying to regain match fitness after a long term injury so who exactly is going to fit the role of the guaranteed goalscorer? Zirkzee at best scores 3 to 4 goals a season and even central attacking midfielders acore more than he does or is capable of

I am saying the classic #9 is a rare species and very few teams load up at the position. Players like Mbuemo and Cunha, versatile attackers, are the type of players teams currently look to stock up on. It is the way the game is being played right now, with an emphasis on possession (more central players/midfielders) and positional interchangeability, with the attacking outlets coming from out wide through wingbacks and wide attackers.

Unless football recycles itself back to the 4-4-2, we are not going to see Yorke and Cole starting, with Ole and Teddy coming off the bench. The days of Berbatov and Rooney starting with Chicharito coming on to poach at the end are a long way away - and even then, Rooney was dropping deep and acting like a 10.

Honest question; How many elite #9s can you name across the top leagues? How many elite 9s are there in the Prem? Haaland is the only one who fits that description. Look at the English national team. If Kane goes down, who steps in to lead that line as a 9? England is probably best associated with the classic 9 in a two-man attack, and they are struggling to produce standout 9s.

Look at Madrid, probably the benchmark for attacking football right now. Mbappe and Vini Jr are not out-and-out strikers. The other young superstar, Lamine Yamal, also not an out-and-out striker.

Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke barely knew each other when the latter arrived at Manchester United in the summer of 1998, but the partnership they forged became the stuff of legend. In training, they were often found working together, practising runs, interchanges, dummies and combinations. That season they scored 53 goals between them as the club won the treble. Yorke shared the Premier League Golden Boot with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Michael Owen on 18 goals. Cole finished one behind. The top 10 scorers in the league that season were all strikers.

But the training pitches and scoring charts paint a very different picture today. Finishing drills are infrequent, possession is paramount and the league’s leading scorers are more often wingers, No 10s or false 9s. Traditional centre-forwards are disappearing. Opta data shows the sharp decline in their influence. Two decades ago, strikers scored 41.6% of the Premier League’s goals – 387 of 931. This season, the figure stands at 25.9% – 291 of 845.

Standout individual striker performances have dwindled, too. Between 2007 and 2012, four out of five seasons featured 10 or more hat-tricks by centre-forwards. In the past nine seasons, that threshold has been passed once.

If you remove Kane and Haaland from the stats, the performance of traditional centre forwards across the Prem has been bleak in recent seasons.
