Eskom won't fine residential customers for failing to register their solar systems by 30 September 2026

on eskom you cant break even - they dont credit you on the account as a rand value its credits that can only be used for power and if im not mistaken you can only use it the the same time frame you sell
sell in day can only be used in day so its not like it helps you save at night

Pretty much the same in CoCT AFAIK. You can never break even, only get credit against units used in a time period (month?) And credits do not count against the fixed monthly fees. It's a no win situation...

That is true. I heard its only power and credits you accumulate for a timeframe. But technically most people here use the grid even if they have solar. So those credits do get used up. It technically is money back to you as you were going to be spending either way. Everyone on this forum is using the grid so I don't see how you don't get your money back unless you are using some 10 units a month in which case its not worthwhile.

My previous boss ran the maths and he registered and started feeding back. He had 30kWh battery and some 15kW of panels on a 3 phase inverter. He had a whole automated system that made him feedback at specific times to accumulate credit in the hours he wanted to use electricity.

This is ultimately in the ballpark where I want to have my system. Even at that point I'll only be covering my own needs for the most part, short of excess on clear summer days. Currently my system is not even half of this, as I suspect is the case for many home users. So until then...

Yeah, dont get me wrong, I would never build a system to export but If the fixed charges are similar then I dont see why not. Like @Neuk_ was considering TOU if he could get clarity from CP. He is already paying the large fixed charges so mind as well try to benefit from TOU if CP has it like they claim on their site.

Where I am you do a lane change without indicating or in an aggressive way there is a AI camera to catch you. You don’t just install an inverter here also. It’s regulated heavily.

But with a well governed place brings its own perks. I made no booking and walked straight into the Happiness Center for the RTA. That’s the licensing department equivalent. I applied for my drivers license conversion, took about 30 minutes. Took them 5 minutes to print the card and that’s it. I was out. They even offered me coffee, for free.

My ID also, in SA I collected my new ID to replace the book just before I left the country. It took me 5 hours to get it at HA in Roodepoort. To bloody collect! In UAE, I just went in. They took my fingerprints and photo. About 30 minutes. And walked out. ID was delivered in 2 days.

Going into gvt buildings here is a real pleasure. In SA I do everything in my power to avoid going. Even if it’s borderline illegal (like driving with expired license) all to avoid dealing with them.

Summed it up well. Plusses and minusses. I found one place that is more middle ground though but that's for another day/thread.

for me at the current rates and rules, it will end up costing me more then what im paying currently to them at present.

My understanding was you could feed back and if you clear your consumption reguarly then you could join the cash for power program where you actually earn money.

Valid point, but if you read all the T&C's, and the limits as to how much power you can feed back, it becomes very hard to make any net returns (battery, inverter, panels, meter, etc). P.S. I am only basing off my cousin's experience, and he has been a CoCT exporter for more than a decade (late 2000's trial period).

Would be great is cousin could give a breakdown of fees, getting actual numbers from someone doing it is of more use than trying to find it on CoCT website (which I gave up trying to find).
 
It completely defies logic. People spend thousands of their own hard-earned money to keep the lights on when the grid fails, taking the pressure off Eskom, and the reward is a threat of a R30,000 fine? They should be thanking citizens for fixing a crisis the government couldn't manage, not trying to squeeze more money out of them.

That's why when people say we need to break the monopoly from Eskom. Sure but you're still going to be paying the muncipality.
