I will only ever do it if they give me cheaper rates during the evening, some commercials clients do get that offer. I would basically want charge to batteries and ev for free after midnight like they do in UK.

I honestly would not mind a higher rate at night - flip i would not mind if they only paid 50% back of what they charge -

all the extra fees they currently charge are insane - plus its no allowed on prepaid so you 100% at their whim not to mention they don't credit your account if you sell more then you use


maybe i am too simple but make it available on prepaid , credit you only 0.5Kwh for every 1Kwh you sell to them - this will cover expenses they claim it costs them by selling that to our neighbors ( so 100% mark up . 50% profit margin) - plus you still need to purchase if you not fully off grid

Congratulations on the EV purchase! I’m in a similar position, bought mine in January and have been charging with solar and a few public charges here and there.

I did some upgrades to the system that pushed me off-grid. Can survive about 3 days without sun. House is self consuming and carrying all loads including the EV charging.

I am still paying for the connection fee and service fees. I have prepaid 3-phase 80A supply and have been toying with the idea of installing a 40kW DC charger and rather using that to fast charge at home. My thinking is that the connection is there and the installation will add value to the property. I can do it using only the savings I would have accumulated in diesel costs from January to date. It will be cheaper at R4/kWh than public charging at the R7-9/kWh.

The math looks good for a COJ prepaid purchase in block 1. Charging twice a week from 10 or 20% SOC to 80% SOC. My EV’s 38.88kWh battery pack would consume about 213kWh in grid power each month , so still within block 1. The AC charger that is currently connected to solar would then be for charging to 100% SOC for the recommended BMS cell balancing once or twice a week, and for backup when grid is not available.

It’s just an idea for now but I have gone down the rabbit hole in research and getting quotes from DC charger suppliers. My electrician has even quoted for the installation, upgrading my DB and CoC. If I do proceed I will get one that supports dynamic load balancing and that I can fit to current solar system when it’s time to cut ties with the municipality.

You not worried theyll shift you across to postpaid and change the tariff structure? Also Eskom Direct, and thats my concern.

There is that concern, but if it comes to that, I am willing to add more solar panels and another battery (including a small gennie) and will go 'off-grid' .. for now, begrudingly support Eskom who are doing a better job than COJ!

Im also on eskom direct and prepaid - they just said they testing prepaid but still have not given clarification on exactly what they intend to do - so im not doing anything till they give clarification because as far as i cna see all their docs still want you to go on to TOU tariff post paid only (even though their media announcement say they have for prepaid ) unless you found something different ?
 
Can you see when the PHEV car was added to the household?

Using at least 20 units of grid just for the car every day. Unfortunately can't charge during the day , not that the last few days would have helped!
