I mean the BS from the gambling industry. Literally half of the billboards in Jhb have slot machines on them.


A sin tax won't work, and it's basically a cynical way for the government to get in on the action.

It's pretty easy to shut this down, because we've actually done it before. If any form of gambling outside of sports betting is illegal, then Massive fines for anyone dealing with or promoting any form of gambling other than sports betting:
Payment gateways - Any payment gateway dealing with a non-sports betting operation.
Media Owners - Any media owner selling advertising space to products that represent or imply anything other than sports betting.
Influencers - Any influencer promoting any form of gambling other than sports betting.
Operators - Lose their operating license if any of their products fall outside the parameters of sports betting.

Make all four citizen-policable; the structures already exist for this in the Ombuds; just give people clear reporting lines.
 
I think I still have something like $60 sitting in PokerStars from when I used to play, before the big online clampdown.

Except the provincial gambling boards disagree with the national one and the licenses are issued by provincial boards not the national one.

If done correctly, the provincial gambling boards should answer to the national gambling board so there is consistency in decisions.

I would like to see the NGB take one of the gambling sites to court over the "misinterpreted clause" to see if it will withstand scrutiny in a court of law, if not then they should not be able to confiscate funds from people.

Alternatively if they don't take it to court then would like to see one of the gamblers, who's proceeds were confiscated, take them to court.

But this is SA so doubt any of that would happen

I 100% agree, but I just don't see the NGB doing that, because if the case goes against them they lose all meaning basically.

It's even dumber than that. You CAN do so on the cards. You just have to drive to a place to do it.
