Xbox Series X / S

Yeah, saw the conversion tables and they are pretty bleak.

On the bright side can always just game on pc now.... but quick resume is a literal game changer.
Yeah that really is and it would be something really handy on handhelds but alas

I don’t know whether it has been shared here, but Xbox announced a mechanism tied to their preservation program.

Most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support this new feature. Players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an XBOX One or XBOX Series X console and launching the game. Once the entitlement is claimed, you can experience the benefits of digital, including XBOX Play Anywhere and XBOX Cloud Gaming where supported, while your physical disc continues to work exactly as it always has.

This is a positive move, but it also raises questions. I don't do Xbox, but the small print is important:

Requires supported console with disc drive, and eligible XBOX One or Series X game disc. One revokable digital license per game disc. License eligibility varies and is subject to change. Disc remains playable. Terms and usage rules apply. Gears 5 sold separately (in-game purchases).

Reading the rules. Top to bottom,
  1. One revokable digital license per game disc
  2. License eligibility varies and is subject to change
  3. Disc remains playable
I would assume that such an entitlement can only be claimed once. There would be plausible regional restrictions. The disc would remain accessible.

At this point in time I don't see a link to the terms and usage, but Windows Central (and some others reported):

Just like sharing a physical game in the real world, if you sell or give the disc away, the digital license will then transfer to the Microsoft Account of the new user, and off your account.

Under Xbox's standard rules, applicable to Xbox One and Xbox Series Digital Games, this applies:

1. Maximum Devices / Users
(unless the Store page or other web page for your Digital Good purchase, rental, or subscription specifies a different number)

Users may access or install Xbox One and Xbox Series Digital Games on any reasonable number of Xbox One or Xbox Series consoles, including a “Home” console or roaming consoles the user is signed into.
Games can only be played on one console at a time. However, when playing on a roaming console, play on the “Home” console is available if a different user is logged in to the “Home” console.

2. Transfer / Copying

Each game you download from the Store has a device-based license and a user-based license. You can designate one console (excluding a cloud-based variant used for game streaming) as your “Home” console, and the device license automatically attaches to it, even if you are purchasing from a different console. The user license is associated with your Microsoft account. A console can be the “Home” console for several people. You can change your “Home” console up to 5 times during a one-year period; when you do so, all your device licenses will automatically move to, and operate only on, the new “Home” console. Anyone can use your game (or other content licensed to that device) on your “Home” console under your device license. You may use all games to which you have a user license by logging in with your Microsoft Account, so long as you are not concurrently playing on another console. These rules are referred to as the “Home console usage rules”. Some game "Add-ons" and other downloadable content available may be limited to your personal use.

3. Additional Restrictions and Terms

For clarity, the one-year period is measured on a rolling basis, starting the moment you assign or change your Home console for the first time. If you reach your Home console change limit for the year, you will receive a message letting you know the next available date you can change your Home console again.

Xbox would need to provide more clarity. They do change their own rules.

Naturally, as this news dropped, many saw the right to resell their license. Claim a digital copy and sell the disc copy.

Regardless, this is a step in the right direction. This may also hint that the next Xbox will not have a disc drive. I am curious whether Sony has similar plans. Steam does this with SteamWorks, but participation in this activation method is limited.

It is also worth mentioning that Xbox's entitlement system will be integral...

Interesting, wonder what games will be play anywhere

Ironically both Xbox and PlayStation killing physical media, yet Microsoft selling the idea in such a way that people see it as a positive.

Yeah sneaky Microsoft, pulling a fast one, while Sony just ourtight looking to inflict high damage on itself with everything it does.
Always thought Sony had more sense and Microsoft being the billion dollar company would be the one to not care about the gamers (it doesn't, but it does what it has to to try and keep gamers happy).

Boo hoo...:)

Btw, still waiting for you to tell us how MS was shot down.

Any feelings on the new Fable gameplay trailer?

Combat still looks a bit "light" (I honestly can't remember how it was for Fable 3), but I'm happy the main character was changed. There seems to be a lot of progress since the last trailer a year or so ago.

That said, Gamescom doesn't really have me excited about anything in particular. Maybe because its all 2027, or maybe because I mentally know Premium won't get it for years to come, but it all feels a bit meh to me.

I have no idea why I just have no love for E-day. I love, love GoW, but E-day just does nothing for me. Maybe I am broken.

Yeah, I liked it but looks a bit easy tbh. The commentator did mention he was playing on Legendary mode and I can't say it looked particularly difficult but then again, Fable is more than just an action combat focused game, so as long as it is enjoyable then it will good.

The rest of the stuff looks great.

I think they did a bit of a 360 a few years back when people were not into that main character they kept showing. Probably around the same time when the world started pushing back against this DEI, Sweet baby nonsense.

Yes, their preservation program has always been rigged toward positive optics. At least in this instance, you can activate a digital entitlement and store the disc.

MS/XBOX still has some poor account-retention policies.

It is also worth adding that people shouldn't get too excited about disc-to-digital since their terms and usage rules aren't published. As with anything corporate, terms and usage can change. You’d better have good laws where you live.
