I guess it is all relative.

What one can afford and what one is willing to pay, is different sides of the same coin.

I love rugby and live test rugby hits like no other live sporting event.

A decent seat, on the halfway line, in rows 7-15 is prime real estate and I would be quite prepared to pay R2000-R2500 to sit there. I think those seats typically go for around R4000...

That Australian test we lost at Ellis Park.

Morning of the test match a mate of mine, who organizers VIP corporate packages had a cancellation. 20 tickets!! The company wasn't happy with the seats!!

Amazing how quickly one can arrange a party of 20, when food, drink and test match rugby is 100% gratis!!

What a day we had?! Result aside...
 
id prefer a freebie/complimentary - cost enough already to get to the game and food and drinks etc
 
If a middle class dad want to take mom and his 2 boys to watch a game. At 2k a ticket it will cost him 8k with out parking and food for 80 min of sport . People can't afford that.

Ticket sales for a match vs kit/concessions, media rights etc.

Surely if the balance outweighs the ticket gain you would want to fill the stadium for ambience and to target those vs empty stadiums.

For a international, sweet spot for me would be around the R250/R300 mark, keeping in mind, family of four so a nice treat for a special event to have saved. More than that and is nope, rather go elsewhere, do something else or watch in a free zone.

But the stadium can only fit so many people... I do think they need a "locals" price range with a lottery system to ensure that everyone gets a chance to watch the big games.

SARU uses the proceeds from these big games to fund rugby development, which does make sense, just means that most of us plebs won't get a chance to see a big game like this in our lifetimes.

I think if you really want to go then the best thing is to get a season ticket - but I also saw that people are getting messed around with those as well.

You can fly for less than R1600 most days... not many Boks games at that price

Believe it or not, there's a place you can do just that - right outside the fenced in runway on the north side, but you need to gain access to the area which is boom controlled. Not sure they let the public in anymore, and sorry, can't recall what that area is called but it includes their one radar setup.
Access is from Kempton Park.

There's also a freeway at the south side of the runway, go park in the yellow lane there. Think it was on the way to Germiston or similar.

Please don't. The cops actually patrol that area of the highway.
 
These prices sure make Premium seem worth it, though still costly and there's nothing like the real thing of course. Dad was into cricket so we did that in the early years, never been to a major live rugby game.

Most expensive grandstand tickets at Cape Town Stadium last Saturday were R3750. Thrown in lunch/supper and you're easily looking at R16k+ for a few hours out.
