UN votes to adopt new world map to reflect Africa's true size

A logical consequence of accurate geography is an Africa with an inflated ego? Maybe, but seems a stupid reason not to update our geography.

Ahead of Friday's vote, Togolese Foreign Minister Robert Dussey told news agency Reuters: "A fair world begins with a fair map."

Yes exactly. An inflated ego because nobody ever looked at a map of the world and thought, oh Africa is so small! And Europe so biig therefore so special.

It is exactly a kind of supremacist thinking derived from imperialist mindset. The way Russians often brag, we are the largest country on earth. So what.

So that-- their opinion and influence is supposed to matter more. These African countries instead of fixing issues at home, push for ridiculous administrative changes which do nothing but cater to egos. Look we are the largest continent - therefore we need the most money. And treat us in a special way!

Meanwhile yes, despite having some of the most abundant mineral and natural resources available, Africa is still in trouble. Need more money, Europe/Asia/America--- give us money.

Whatever their shortcomings in foreign policy, do you actually disagree with their reasoning that is virtue signalling nonsense? Perhaps third world nations should focus on why their countries are still poor, corrupt and useless despite billions in aid over the past few decades?
Putting things in proper scale is science not woke nonsense. I'm 100% sure you'd be singing a very different tune if this wasn't africa and the US agreed with it.

UN just wants an accurate map. I'm not really understanding your political rant about updating a geographical fact. Some of you have this attitude of the truth must prevail but when the UN pushes for a more truthful map then you want to halt progress because something something left right nick nack paddywhack.

It is woke nonsense. It is something which is not important at all but it has to do with:

Online campaign group #CorrectTheMap said: "You could fit the United States, China, India, Japan, Mexico and much of Europe into Africa and still have land to spare."

Ahead of Friday's vote, Togolese Foreign Minister Robert Dussey told news agency Reuters: "A fair world begins with a fair map."

He told a UN briefing earlier: "A map is never neutral. It shapes perceptions, influences how the place of peoples and continents in the world is understood."

But that's supremacist thinking. We are better than all those others BECAUSE we have a bigger continent.

That's what's implied. Give us more money and more influence, because we are bigger in land mass but we contribute very little to the UN and we require UN aid.

No 19th century imperialist colonial power ever thought - We British, French, Dutch or Japanese come from a big country therefore we deserve Rhodesia, Congo, the Cape or Manchuria.

Good point, though the timing is rather suspicious for sure. A fair amount of coincidental political changes these days actually.

Nope. I also think Trump's re-naming of Lake Ontario is pointless as well (as I stated in the US thread). Also see my previous post that the new map has some inaccuracies as well related to Greenland and Antarctica.

It's the same with town renamings in SA. Money wasted while corruption and theft continue.

Easy test, ask yourself how many Congolese or Malawians wake up every day and think -- life is hard because we are small on Mercator?

Ask the people around you. Why they think life is hard economically or socially.

This is just posturing and playing political games. AU should be concerned with fixing corruption and conflicts in Africa and not about the map. Once they fixed the former - they can work on minor cosmetics. By all means the kangz narrative can be pushed if they wish.

Two things can be true at the same time. If there is never a 'right' time for doing some things, they never get done...

I don't see a reason to change millions of maps. How much money is wasted that way.

And it is only there to show up - we are bigger so give us more respect, i.e. more money.

Respect comes from influence. US has influence because US spends trillions. Tongo has to find its own niche. Switzerland is tiny but has a lot of influence, at least socially.

Politics is a very dirty game, almost always. I prefer to at least lean in the direction of caution.

And the permanent population of Greenland and Antarctica amount to less than 60,000 people (Google says less than 0.001% of the world...)

In the digital world, changing a map projection is trivial. Try doing it on your smartphone sometime!

Everyone talks about GPS navigation. What they actually mean is GPS aided navigation on electronic maps.

P.S. I love paper maps myself, but for small scale ones the projection does not matter.

Mind boggling that some people seem to think an accurate geographical representation of the earth is "woke nonsense" / "what's the point of this nonsense".

Sometimes life also needs to move on and be updated despite all the nonsense occurring in the world. Don't think this is a huge deal but I also don't have an issue with it.
Agree. Are they going to make Russia and other cuntries smaller then? Or is this all about Africa in which case its just woke nonsense?
