I'm looking for an affordable plunge saw / track saw and rail to rip cut some sheets with nice clean edges and super straight. Does something affordable like this exist?

Not a circular saw. Must run on a track.

I like the bosch but it is nearly R13 000.
Metabo is around R8000

I have the Methabo cordless one with two rails.

I have this, bought years ago when it cost me R5500:


Was accurate out of the box. Came in a very durable case with 1 track, a blade and two clamps.

I can second this. Also have one of these and it's been excellent. You can also get a 3m track for it which is helpful if you buy full sheets and need to break them down. I find it much better for these big cuts than my "little" table saw.

Yeah I need to cut full lengths. So double rail or 2.4 length would be Awesome.

I'll see if there is something secondhand. Although for this tool it is important to he straight and good.

It's not cordless but that's because the cordless plunge cut metabo is 8/9k without a rail, battery and charger..

I have no idea what their online service is like, because I have a physical store around the corner from me.. In store service has always been great though and never had an issue.. They even looked through their systems for a receipt from 5 years ago when I had to get back the deposit for a 18kg gas bottle..

Totally legit company, I did order one thing online from them for in-store collection and it went fine.

So for now I'm thinking of getting the small Metabo (not cordless) and then a Makita guide rail, looks like they are compatible with each other. I'm not a big fan of the Metabo guide compared to the Makita which has the extra support in. I would love to get a plunge saw but just can't afford it right now.

With the makita version with what looks like an enclosed guide does that mean you have to push the saw right to the end of the rail to be able to lift the saw off?

Not sure. Gonna try to see it there is something nearby is can look at. Don't think you have too lock it in

Not sure about their online store, but they are a Cape Town Northern Suburbs based hardware retail chain store. My favourite chain of hardware stores in CPT. I normally just pop in on the way home, but they are legitimate.

No, you don't. That t-track is for fitting stops etc. the saw itself does not run in it.

Makita is great track saw, have it for years.
Besides two long tracks recently I got 80cm one with 90 degree track saw square so you can just hold it against the edge and just cut without clamps.
Also got rail hinge which I still did not use.

I was gluing trunking to the wall for some cables.
I switched it on 6 times to glue sections of trunking and spent one of supplied stick (maybe tad more).

Battery was full and ended up with two dots bright green and third on faint.

Quite nice not to have cables and so far I'm impressed.

I ended up leaving my cordless glue gun switched on by mistake and I noticed it an hour later, the 4AH battery was still on 1 LED and the glue was still smoking hot.

Have you considered the Einhell ? , German brand, R3500 with the rails.

I have bought Japanese Saws from the store, and found the staff to be both knowledgeable and helpful.
